IMO, an overlooked thing that separates a lot of random drinkers from the serious geeks is understanding why something is what it is. There is a lot of history tied to beer in both traditional brewing nations and even the recent American craft revolution.

I usually checkout the tap list, then make sure they have something vegetarian for my wife. Both bases covered and good to go.

When you start using acronyms for beers (SN, NB, 3F, KBS, etc) when talking to non-beer people and they give you a blank stare back.

the same blank look you get when you try to explain that is is just easier to buy a ticket, in order to go buy beer rather than just drive to the store (or in the case of the beer we drink drive to store after store after store trying to find it)

You bring your own to events like weddings. Even with an open bar, great beer is better than free beer.

Leaving parties feeling like you have 'spread the gospel', then later that week getting text messages from family/friends asking: "What was that vanilla beer you brought over that night?" when they are in the store.

Do you actually speak in acronyms. I would also give you a blank stare is you asked me to pick up SN pale out loud.

You: Randalled your own beer. Blended to copy a variant. Read about beer online. Check your phone for beer trade updates. Can't buy beer at the grocery store anymore because there's nothing worth drinking.

Bought a temp controlled refrigerator so your beer wouldn't get in the way of the kitchen fridge. Then bought another to age beers in and another for beers to "drink now"
