Is there an entire branch of sociology dedicated to beer subculture now? I swear I see more articles these days about the beer "scene" than, you know... actual beer.

Not all beer people are enraged. IMO, it's mainly the entitled pricks that are enraged. Unfortunately, the squeaky wheel gets the grease and the notoriety.

I'm not sure this is just about beer geeks. It's really about the internet. It makes being angry and voicing your angry opinions very convenient.

I'm outraged that so many other people are outraged over little things that don't really matter in the great tapestry of human existence!!!

    Wait...

I've read this whole thread to this point, and I still can't get past this...

How can you frequent a progressive rock forum and NOT be a condescending, pretentious prick?

It often feels like a response to a feeling of inferiority. Craft beer (in America) is a new and still not totally widespread thing. Up until quite recently being super into beer made you more than a little odd. Now that the trend is much more mainstream people who were into it a while ago or simply want to feel superior claim that you can't be a "real" craft beer fan if you drink anything besides barrel-aged unfiltered wild fermented IPAs made at breweries that's two men, three beards, and a dog in shack in northern New Hampshire.

It feels very similar to the hostility in the gaming community. Particularly among PC gamers. Again it's a hobby that has only recently become legitimized (also predominantly male.) Once after asking a question about video cards on a steam forum I was accused of not being a "real" gamer because I played games on a laptop.

People become very possessive about their hobbies. That's fine, they just need to stop being dicks about it.

It's not just beer people, or people on internet forums. Every hour someone or some group must get outraged over something somebody else said, did, or thought about. Pretty sad IMO.

Beer people are no more outraged than people involved in any other hobby via the internet. It is just the "in" thing to write poorly thought out articles on beer right now.

How were you able to advance from the fedora? You must have inspired a brewer to come out with a Quintuple IPA ...

For some of us, it's not about the increase in production and availability. I would think a beer blogger would know that.

The beer will probably remain good. The Big Boys have always been able to make good beer. They make excellent AALs, if that's what you like.

It's their aggressive tactics to shove independent craft breweries off the shelves and taps that causes me to refuse to buy their products.

“You need a critical mass of people who are sane and don’t want to perpetuate the hostilities,” he says. “It’s also good for the overall group to remember the higher purpose, which in this case is to promote good beer.” That sounds like the majority of BA to me. I really avoid the majority of other social media when it comes to beer so I am likely sheltered from a lot of the cat-**** rage referenced here. I have said some stupid things in these forums because I don't know as much as most folks on here and have never really been yelled at or even made to feel remotely bad about it - big part of why I like coming here, btw.

In his defense he did say "shitty 36 hours" and not "worst" - I imagine any bad situation is compounded by being forced to experience it confined to an Amtrak train (or worse, Greyhound bus).

One of the best things about BA, and I mean it sincerely, is it brings out a certain amount of batshit crazy people that absolutely must be the smartest guy in the room. With the best opinions. And the biggest collection of rare beers. These are the people we ridicule plain to see, and sometimes they don't even know it.

Yeah, I like that some people who participate in this hobby can't control their outbursts in an online forum. It's fucking funny. Knowing their head is going to explode because they bought an infected beer? That is pure joy!

And it's still a very small percentage of beer people.
Beer is 99% asshole free. So it isn't a story to talk about 1%. Beer doesn't have a people problem. Far from it.

    Cheers.

95% of people on the Internet are outraged about something. In other words, this isn't exclusive to beer drinkers.

I think the Internet allows the 1% vocal minority to become the 5% vocal minority. It's Social Media Courage.

    Great article.

Good point. I think the Greyhound factor would intensify the negative qualities of even the best situation. "Hey man, can I get a cig?" would cast a pall across such things as even great sex with Olivia Wilde...for instance....
