Yeah...I only really felt the cold when I started my shift or when I came back from break/lunch. Changing your gloves every few hours helped too. Where I worked, everything was timed and the margins were tight. Picking orders on a double jack wasn't bad. -10 you would start sweating if you moved quickly enough. It's when I sat on a forklift for long periods, did temp checks, or had to search for lost product that really sucked. When the hydraulic fluid in the 3 stage mast started to freeze, simple tasks would take forever.

The smell of the artificial coolant pumped through that huge room is something I will never forget.

I guess I was lucky, our warehouse is unionized so I picked orders for about 5 months. Most people there are either stupid and protected by the union or lazy and protected by the union... What ended up happening was I stood out because I worked and got placed into different jobs and learned the place quick. Most of the time I was a taxi who had a double jack and would just go in the freezer and take the pallets to the dock that were being picked up and loaded and unloaded trucks.

Basicly after 5 months in 4 out of 5 days most of my night would be spent in 33F and I would go back in the freezer and pick for overtime, When you see a 800-1k checque each week you wouldnt complain about the time spent in the freezer.

I was in a similar situation. The work was union because you didn't have a choice, but the company had the right to protect performance (in the contract). Which meant, if you couldn't cut it you were warned...and then fired. No layoffs. The union couldn't protect you in many cases and you had to adapt quickly.

New guys picked orders on swing shift in the freezer. As soon as the next batch of guys were hired, we would move out to the 33 room or pick produce if we were lucky. But most days for the first year, we would be in the freezer for at least 2-3 hours per day. OT on a 12 hour shift or holidays it was pretty much mandatory to be in the freezer. We would bid for our days off and jobs and many times I would take split days off or work day shift where my seniority sucked (and I was in the freezer most of the day) just to go to school on Tuesday and Thursday.

Later on, when my seniority got better, I would choose to pick produce rather than pull or stock pallets in the freezer. Sometimes I wasn't so lucky. Once I learned to load trucks off the cold dock, I rarely went back in there except when I was missing product.

That was almost 10 years ago. Ohh....the stories I could tell you about what happens to your food before it reaches the store. Some good....others you wouldn't believe.

Internal Auditor. It pays dividends when I'm traveling to an onsite audit. Some sad manager may have to take one for the team and invite me to dinner, but for the most part I can explore the city on my own time. Plus, I work from home normally, so that business hours whale distro tho.
