    1. Auctions suck
    2. I don't care if they have auctions because I will avoid/block that trader

So, let me get this straight - OP barely lifts a finger, posting a vague and most likely ridiculous auction or huge listed ISO:FT, and expects ME to dig through my stash/spreadsheet and get creative with an offer that they'll wait 72 hours to respond to, if at all, with "ehhhh...you're gonna have to add. I've got four other offers that double yours."

Auctions and lists are bullshit primarily because they are disrespectful of BAs time and fucking LAZY. OPs literally do NOTHING, while expecting everyone to scurry and make them an offer. Unfortunately, some people do which just encourages the whole thing. Utterly stupid.

I posted, ISO: Gueuze, lambic, wild-ale FT: VR.

I wanted bulk sours (not whalez). So fucking sorry i don't know exactly what i want. If you think for a second I took one guys offer and took it to another person saying, "hey, i was offered, you have to do better" then you're tool who thinks the worst of everyone. I know the value of what I have, but i'm not about to pit people against each other like the this is the fucking coliseum, fuckin' haters.

I'm all about having open and civil discussions about beer. We all have are own opinions on the subject matter, but in the end we all can agree we love beer. Right??

If you don't like lists, vague ISO/FT posts, make me an offer posts, etc.....simply ignore them or move forward.

Just like the radio, if you don't like the station...YOU have the option and choice to change it. Same concept applies to the TV.

In fact, with the new changes, it's probably easier for everyone, including *newbies* to see this coming ahead of time before getting involved in BM's.

Also, not everyone who posts lists are auctioning off their beer. It's pretty easy to tell once involved in a BM (IMO) on what their intentions are right off the bat.

There's still plenty of posts that are *specific* that are going to get done before the obvious auction threads. Also, the site is full of awesome traders, so there are still plenty of options out there for people to choose to trade with. In the end, if you play your cards right, you make solid trade partners & friends over the course of time and don't have to frequent the trade forums as often

    Cheers!

Everything you said is true. However the difference is now auctions are sanctioned. Previously they were a dirty little secret that were considered very bad form. Now it will become more and more common (as we can see by the trade offers currently being posted). Some folks are ok with that, others are not. I guess my concern is it is a monumental shift in trading protocol that undermines the previous stance of this site (which was strongly enforced). Strange.

You don't know what you want, but you know the exact value of what you have. Seems convenient for you, and a headache for anyone trying to trade with you.

And I know the value of my time. Thanks for proving you're exactly the kind of guy I've started ignoring.
Totally agree. Maybe the rise of Reddit, Instagram and FB trading groups has had an effect on BA and they're trying to compete (regain lost traffic? improve current traffic?) by becoming more like those groups. The strict rules and underlying social structure (that was enforced with "reply" functionality) were the two biggest reasons I chose to trade mostly here. Now both of those have disappeared, and in their place have appeared truckloads of ridiculous ISO:FT and questionable "Completed Trades" that are impossible to audit and seem more to either pump or deflate "value".

I'm really confused about auctions. I made a post for some beers and I have a ton of beers for trade. I'm a ticker and want to try all the top 250. I made the decision to try all the top 250 prior to really understanding beer and now feel like I can't give up on the task! Anyway, I want to trade with a person who has the most ticks for me. One ISO post leads to 3/4 trades as I have lots/multiples and a massive wants list. I was told by a trader that he will not trade with me as I was auctioneer. I did not realize that I was auctioning I was just trying to expand my trades as large as possible. This trade ended up netting me 3 trades. Once certain trades started to expand and include beers that someone else was offering I would ask the other person that I don't need specific beer any longer can we add something else. I guess this is an auction? I don't want to be viewed negatively but I want lots of different beers, what would be the best way to do this without being so hated?

Man, this is really really well said. Honestly made me self evaluate and realize how much I actually [unintentionally] fall in the protectionism category. However, this is partly why I have instituted a one year ban on posting trades for myself, and have never enjoyed this site and drinking good beer more.

Believe it or not, there are people who will offer feedback on an ISO:FT with no agenda at all other than to help the poster make a successful trade, and sometimes that feedback will amount to "You're asking too much" because it's the truth and (it appears) the poster may be unaware of what trades are actually getting done.

It's not always about "ME! ME! ME!" and selfish gain. Sure, there are buttheads, but there are also a lot of good folks here who just want to help others get the chance to try great beers, with zero interest in benefiting themselves.

If your sole interest, out of the kindness and generosity of your heart, is in helping a newbie trader complete a trade, then you can always private message them and say hey, I don't think you will get any hits on the trade you offered and here's why...

It doesn't need to be public. The market should take care of everything when nobody responds to his trade.

I guess I'm confused at all the concern about this rule change. Did none of you come across people running behind-the-scenes auctions before now?

Because I sure as hell did. I'm not really sure how much difference this new official stance actually makes. People were already trying to conduct auctions, but in sneaky, harder-to-detect ways due to the official prohibition of such trading behavior. Ways that *require* me to waste my time sleuthing them out before deciding that it's an auction and that I'm not interested.

The way I see it, opening up the forum to allow auctions might actually increase the number of auction-style posts that are blatantly and obviously portrayed as such. Which in turn makes it easier for those of us who don't want to fool around with an auctions to see them for exactly what they are. The real question? How long until we start seeing posts like this:

    FT: [rare walezbro]

    ISO: best offer

Personally, I would love it. Because I can then promptly scroll right on past that post without giving it so much as a second thought. Much better than responding to ISO: list, FT: list post only to find out that it was a secret auction after getting zero response on a BM that contains ISOs and FTs from the OP's post.

Well, if the trade offer you post makes it seem like you are an auction trader, I suggest you have some choices:
-Be more specific with your ISO.
-Indicate in your post you are not looking for whales, or are looking to go $4$.
-Live with the consequences of posting in a way that makes folks assume you are doing an auction.

There may be more alternatives, but none come to mind right now.

So am to understand that straight up auctioning is OK now? I had a guy already respond to me saying " the best offer I got was X, what can you do?" One of the reasons BA has been my preferred choice for so long has been their rules on auctions.

Tell them to kiss off. It is allowed now, but don't play the game.

This is very disappointing. I feel like there is no haven anymore for those who want to just do honest trading. The loudest voices in the room are the Jack Asses looking to win big and they seem to get their way every time.

Don't worry, just reading this thread, there are still great traders out there. In fact, I agree with the comments that this will make it easier to spot these kind of people since they can put it right in their trade request now.

It sucks when you are inquiring about a trade and you get a response like that, but like others have said, I think it is easy enough to not trade with them and put them on your do not trade with list.

Sure there is. Previous traders. It's always been the best way to conduct trading anyway. Just like in business, its all about repeat customers.

To add to this, I'll be letting people know they are on my list. They probably won't give a rat's ass, but if they get enough responses of "Thanks, I won't be trading with you in the future because..." they'll start to think about what they're doing. Yes, I'm an eternal optimist.
