I use my goblet for curls when not using for beer.

I saw it listed on Surly's events page as well. I'd love to try some BA Darkness!

Unfortunately, getting excited about any brewery on the guest tap list is futile. There have never been any announced tappings. It seems entirely random and complete luck of the draw. If we find out that BA Abraxas is being tapped at DLD, you could hang around the guest taps allllll day and miss it when you go to the bathroom.

Not trying to be a downer. Just saying, don't expect to find anything specific on tap. If you are really set on it, then hopefully you're in the gate early and its tapped at open. Otherwise its a crapshoot.

Agreed. When it comes to the guest taps, I'd remove all expectations other than getting to try an excellent beer.

With this being my first time...what is the process for getting a beer? Do you just walk up and and ask what is available? Do they just pour you whatever they have at that specific tap?

Its written on chalkboards in the back of the tent. Last year the super whalezbro seemed to be in the first tent. A bunch of people were waiting in line for Bourbon County....or CBS last year and I looked 2 tents over and there was Abraxas with no line. The guest taps were the biggest and best surprise for me. It seems like kegs just rotate. When one thing kicks they tap the next thing. Erase the chalkboard and write the next thing.

That's how the Three Floyds tents are as well. 2014 was my first DLD and my first taste of Dark Lord ever ended up being 2009 Bourbon Barrel Dark Lord that was put on tap about 6 people ahead of me in line.

yea just about being in the right place at the right time. When I went in 2013 there was one point where I had a parabola in one hand and a kbs in the other, good times!

Agreed, in 2014 I had a Black Tuesday in one hand and double barrel Huna in the other and washed them down with King sue. Like everyone is saying, guest taps are right place right time.

You are getting so many peoples hopes up with this post, only for them to be shit on during the actual event when they miss the whale guest taps

If you don't find something awesome at the guest taps during any point of DLD, I think it's time to move on to a new hobby.

Let's talk about the food situation? How has it been on previous events? Counting on whether I should bring my own beef jerky, or just bring extra cash for overpriced turkey legs....i doubt I'll see turkey legs but love to bring them up for reasons...

This is going to sound like a typical answer, but I'd say both. I brought jerky, pretzels and fuirt/protein bars last year, and then I still bought burgers and food during the day.

You're going to be drinking A LOT of double digit abv stouts all day. You'll need plenty of food and snacks to go along with it if you're to last the whole 12hr event. Some of the best times were from the 8-10P.M. hour last year.

Last year my group hit up the curry wurst/doner food truck, the brisket tacos, the Copenhagen hot dog, and the bacon cheeseburger. With as much alcohol in our systems as we had, the prices weren't bad for festival food, and we were all pretty impressed with the quality. Definitely bring snacks, but you'll find that you need a burger or a kabob to help keep things level at some point.

Just don't go in wanting one specific special beer and you'll be fine, you will find a few great beers on tap somewhere that day.

Chasing whales in general is lunacy IMO. Doing it at DLD where what's on tap when you get in line may be completely different than what's on tap when you get to order is a waste. There will be a ton of great beer there, whales or not, enjoy what you can. Anything else is gravy.
