Dude, I do not know what they do for QC and that is why I asked the question, nothing implied. The brewery itself mentioned "tasting panels".

Indeed, and in the end GI stood behind their defective product. But agreed, perhaps these issues can't be detected early on.

Goose Island received reports of infected beer, investigated, issued refunds, and apologized.

Oddside received reports of infected beer, denied it, blamed customers for improper storage, and asked loyal fans to keep buying their beer anyway.
Every brewery will experience infections or failed beers at some point...it's how the brewery deals with the problem that is important

Yeah but reports of infection came in to GI right away, Oddsides didn't start happening to other beers until 4-5 months past sale. Little bit of a difference. If all the Hipster and Hazels went to shit by the 1st of the year (30 days) I suspect you would have seen a different outcome / way this was handled.

Morningwood was closer to this.. it went bad around the 30 day mark and I should know I was the first to report it to them and actually deliver them bottles to both taste and test.

I guess Oddside should adopt Stone's labeling practices. Enjoy By...IMMEDIATELY!

I wonder if Oddside told anybody at the release party that the 10 cases they were wheeling to their car needed to be consumed within 30 days?

Next time just call it Hipster of Tarts...free trucker hat with every 12 case purchase

It's a *huge* difference. I get that 4-5 months seems like a pretty short timeframe for a beer that people expect to be able to store for awhile given their past experiences. But the difference in timeframe shouldn't be completely discounted when considering the brewery's obligation to "make it right".

I don't know what the correct amount of time passed is before a brewery is off the hook for its product, but I also can't get too up in arms about a brewery declining to undertake a major refund/exchange/compensation initiative 4-5 months out from when they sold a beer. Especially if it's only affecting a small proportion of customers. If others feel differently, that's certainly up to them to adjust their purchase behavior accordingly. Somehow, I don't think future releases are going to be any less insane to attend...

^This should have been said a long time ago. I doubt Kroger would be willing to give you a refund on a perishable product you bought 4 months ago.

Are you comparing barrel aged stouts to a carton of eggs?

You guys do realize that most breweries put 180 day (6 month) shelf lives on the IPA's. I believe a reasonable expectation for shelf life of a BBA imperial stout should be at least that long, yes? How are we even discussing this?

My candidate for worst analogy of the year. Prior to the release, please cite where OSA stated their BA beers (BAIMM, etc) have an enjoy by date (and less than 5 months at that apparently) whereas food dates are *clearly* labeled as such. Ridiculous post.

Can you cite where they said you can keep them indefinitely without compromising the flavor?

Does anyone know if the production of the '____of Tarts' series overlapped the production of the bba stout black Friday releases and were both series produced in the same location? Does anyone see where I'm going with this?

5 months? For an imperial stout? C'mon man you cannot be serious. How about this. Give me a stout from *any* brewery that has an enjoy by less than 5 months.

He has to be trolling. 4-5 months is far from "indefinite".

I hinted at that earlier in the thread, also.

I stopped by at Odd Side on my way to Grand Rapids for KBS week and Oddside was selling some bottles of Hipster. The bartender said they just found a case of them earlier week. 1 per customer. The two of us picked up 1 each. I was waiting to try them with my friends in a few weeks. I wonder if these will have turned sour, too. Considering the case must have been stored properly by Odd Side Ales. I'll report back when I get together with my friends.

I did not see that, good to know I'm not the only one who realizes wild sours can wreak havoc on other beer styles. I'm not sure of Oddsides setup but this seems like a decent suspect

Possibly. He could be an employee of OSA for all I know with they way they phrased their response upthread. Breweries aren't perfect. I think we all understand that (although sometimes our posts here indicate otherwise ). It's how they respond to situations like this which is how their customer service is defined. And from reading OSA's post up above they need some work in this department imo. I hope people keep honestly reporting their experiences with their bottles. If there continue to be more and more reports of 'target character drift' I would like to think OSA would have to reconsider their stance. They have entered the IL market recently and how this plays out will certainly impact any future purchases of mine.
