If I am reviewing a beer, I rinse. If I am drinking casually, I may not if it's a similar beer, or going strong lighter flavor to stronger flavor of similar style.

Rinse if different style, if its same style and different brew(ery) I may let it slide.

Otherwise your nose is getting the equivalent of a Suicide at 7-11.

Honestly it depends on how drunk, or lazy I am. I like to rinse, but, after too many, I just stop.

Probably not, but its a mental thing - I'd rather have a rinsed glass. Where I do think it comes into play for me is the smell. Residue of the previous beer seems to mess with the smell of the current beer.

If it's a different beer I always rinse, and if it's the same beer I almost always rinse just because I'm on autopilot.

When I'm drinking at home and I plan on drinking two different beers of the same style, I always drink the best one first, skip the rinse, and proceed to the next beer. I may be fooling myself but the residual scent from the first (superior) beer has a way of propping up the second (usually cheaper) beer.

Lately I have been going to beer tasting classes at Totalwine. Every chair gets a bottled water and one of those spittoons. I have started to use the bottled water to swish around in my glass between pours, dumping the rinse into the spittoon. It's not 100% but it's better then nothing...

I always rinse. Those aroma flavors haunt me from beer to beer, man. I can't stand when smell what I know is some dried up head from my previous brew in my current one. Even if its the same style. I think the new glass is superfluous unless you are chaging styles and happen to have appropriate glassware. And we all should be rinseing our glasses before we pour our beer anyway, folks. That goes for the first beer poured, too.

example of what i usually do:

today i am drinking HopDevil in my IPA glass. each new HopDevil bottle gets poured into my glass when it gets low. if i were to switch to say Pinner i would clean the glass out then pour Pinner in.

    new beer requires a clean

If it is to the point where I am questioning whether or not to bother to change or rinse glasses I most likely just drink out of the bottle or can. In the odd event that I drink a bomber myself I will rinse the glass if the first half has taken me a while.

Anytime an attractive woman hands me a beer I don't ask if she rinsed the glass.

Rinse. Not because I think it will change the taste of the beer, but to get rid of the dried lacing that muddles the aroma.

My preferred method is new beer, new glass. However, when I'm not in the mood to wash a lot of glasses, I rinse and shake dry [being real careful about nearby walls]. But...if I'm really lazy or had a few, I just pour away. When washing glasses, I only use soap on the rim and run hot water in the glass for 10-15 seconds then finish with cold water.

For me of course not, but...

It's just a mental thing about having a clean start for a new beer. I am probably with a lot of the responses I've seen - rinse each time, maybe not if the same beer. Sometimes I change glasses, because of what @fredmugs said: I have the glasses. No rules, just feel.

Question: Why is drying the glass necessary? Does it help with lacing / head retention on the glass? Just wondering what purpose it serves. It's not like the miniscule residue of water impacts the beer smell or taste in any way.
