Surly - Xtra Citra Pale Ale

Close, Todd adds Mosaic. Sue is 100% citra

 

You can't really compare them, it's apples to oranges. Sure both use only citra... but the session vs pale, they have totally different back bones. They aren't in the same category in my opinion.

 

Yeah maybe so. But they're still both a Citra Hopped Pale Ale. And I've read a LOT of people doing so lately.

 

I know that. My point was that Surly already makes an IPA with plenty of Citra in it that's frequently compared to/judged against Sue.

A full on Citra pale from Surly would probably be similar to Todd which is a very analogous beer to Sue in overall reception, and style.

Surly Ten: Imperial Smoked Xtra Citra

 

I picked up a 4 pack on the way home this evening & I'm about half through with the first one. I won't post a review until I've had another tomorrow, but here are the cliff notes so far: thin and mostly one-dimensional; good citrus aroma, more hops bittering than flavor. Some malt in the finish. Virtually no head, and what there is is thin and recedes quickly. Not a bad beer, but there are much better choices for low ABV pale ales.

 

I assume this is fully available in the Rochester area?

 

Yep - Best price is Costco at $5.99/4 pack. I think 7.99 elsewhere.

 

Dang. $1.50 a can is pretty drinkable. Might have to check Costco on my lunch.

 

That Costco price is pretty hard to beat. Do you need to be a member for booze?

I'm curious what other Session (under 5%) Pale Ales you'd rank as much better. Not saying Xtra is the end all, I just want to know.

So, Todd is awesome but too expensive, Xtra Citra is cheap but shitty...where's the sweet spot? Furious?

 

Overrated is $7.49 a 4 pack at TW - sounds like the sweet spot to me? Bought two four packs of Citra and very likely won't buy any more, not a big fan.

 

Boat from Carton Brewing in NJ is the best I've had - still has juicy flavors for a beer that's only 4.2%. I don't really know of one around here, so will probably be drinking a fair amount of Xtra on the golf course this summer.

 

One of the best I've had is when Sisyphus brews their citra session. Delicious. $8-9 for a crowler I believe.

 

I don't know what you fuckers are complaining about. My four pack pretty much poured themselves down my gullet.
