yes breakfast stout is a shelf turd. I can usually find it close to year round, just not at the main stores.

There has been a ton of it sitting around in my area recently but no discounts. It seems like Founders increased production of it within the past year or so because I don't remember this quantity being so available before.

I definitely wouldn't say that New Glarus produces "shelf turds". they just brew a lot of beer and it all stays in state. In every gas station, grocery store, liquor store. It is ubiquitous. just because something is easy to find, does not make it a "shelf turd". I'd say turnover is pretty good for most NG beers. Scream IIPA being the exception. They really need to do smaller runs of that beer.

Shelf turd Means it sits, has nothing to do with quality of the beer. Palo santo marron is one of my favorite beers, it's a shelf turd because it's always on the shelves. Also I'm going to be in the tri state area in a few weeks, has New Glarus released anything good lately?

As soon as FBS went down to a permanent price of 9.99/4, it started flying off of my shelves. Before that, I was lucky to sell 2 cases during its season.

I didn't mention anything about quality. I'm saying that if a you brew a lot of beer and it sells and gets replaced with fresh stock, it isn't a shelf turd. I'd say old beer on shelves is worthy of the term, but easy to find beer with a high turnover rate is not. I wouldn't even consider Palo Santo Marron a "shelf turd" beacuse it doesn't really go downhill for quite a while. lots ofpeople prefer it with some age.

As for current NG beers, Oud Bruin and Milk Stout Thumbprints 4pks are on the shelves right now and the currently available seasonals (6pks) are Coffee Stout, Fat Squirrel (Nut Brown), Dancing Man (Bavarian Hef), & Totally Naked (Lager). They also were selling a brewery only Zwickel but I'm not sure if they still have any of that or not. Fruit 750's are also everywhere, as usual.

Personally I'd rather drink it 6 months and in from bottle date, but it's still better than most at 1 year.

I can't afford all the "shelf turds" we have around here. FBS, Expedition, even some Xocoveza. No discounts, though.

BTW, I am very happy to find Expedition Stout that has been sitting around ("store cellared") for a year or more. One of the grocery stores here did have some >1YO product that was discounted. Not a big discount, but I bought it anyway. :grinning:

Ok I see your point, but I consider anything that can be picked up regularly a shelf turd. That's just semantics though so I'll move on. I am definitely going to pick some stuff up, hopefully I can find most of it close to the border.

Agreed. Different stroke for different folks. Best of luck beer hunting on your trip to the midwest. You should have no trouble finding any of the aforementioned New Glarus beers, near the border.

Cant say I would argue about Mango Magnifico (unless you are using it for a base for salsa) but I do know that lots of people were clammering for Blushing Monk to be released again and I think the price ($17.99 around here) had more to do with it just sitting around.

Heard that Founders discontinued Double Trouble so you wont be seeing Doom anymore unless they use another base beer and IMO I am glad for that.

Definately right on about CBS, BH, SR, and dont forget Bolt Cutter and one of my personal favorites Frangelic Mountain Brown. Founders is trying to bring new beers to market (i.e. Dark Penance, Azzaca, Spectra Trifecta) and I did hear that Founders is going to be releasing an Imperial Coffee brown.

On the flipside FBS has always been a go to beer for me and was lucky enough to try it at a tap takeover after it was randalled through coffee beans and coconut, YUM.

Let me know where you are shopping because I cant seem to get it for less than $10.99 in the NW Burbs. Deffinately better than the $14.99 I used to spend 7-8 years ago but wont shy away from a great deal either.

    Cheers

Funny you mentioned Curmudgeon. I just saw both of them sitting side by side at my local Total Wine.

Just saw a huge stack of Founders Harvest at my local WF (they have it on special for ~$12). A few years ago it would sell out within a few days.

Every 4pk in my town (and there are a lot) still has a baby on it, so we never even got the new packaging, too much old overstock

    A) so many options in the coffee/chocolate stout dept these days
    B) many options that are just better quality wise
