Bought a 4-pack of Sixpoint Sweet Action a week ago (BBD Sept 12) and each of the cans had a very sweet unpleasant Caramel Candy taste to them. I have had this numerous other times and remember it being smooth and creamy with a very nice hop presence. Could this be that the hops have receded to the point of the beer becoming sweeter or is this something else?

ive had it on tap and from the can many times and they seem to be very similar qith the tap having a little less hop s to it. i can see a caramel taste but not really. maybe aome bad cans? now all i can think of it as tasting like those cow tails, the caramels with creme in the middle.

Sixpoint reportedly uses a 9 month shelf life for their canned beers "Best before" date code (way too long for most of the styles of their canned beers- most US brewers, both craft and non-, would use a 3-6 month period for such beers).

So your can probably dates from December 2011 and, making matters worse, in all likelihood the request on the side of the can to "PLEASE KEEP REFRIGERATED" was probably ignored by the distributor and/or retailer. Lighter style beers like cream ales and adjunct lagers often takes on a sickly sweetness when they are well past their freshness period.

I agree with the above poster... if it's "Best by" is this month... it's 9 months old. That's too long for a relatively low-ABV cream ale, I don't care what Sixpoint says.

I've tasted plastic pretty prominently every time I've had this beer and I gave it a fair chance. More for everyone else, it's just not for me.

Did it also have a "slick" mouthfeel? I've had problems with my beers being buttery (or caramelly when using roasted malts) if I rush the beer too much. Let the rest of them sit in the fridge for a while and see if it goes away.

More than likely it is that it is just past it's prime, I guess. Bummer!

IMO, Sixpoint has diacetyl issues like a fat kid has diabetes...with their horrible QC it's only a matter of time.

I had diacetyl issues in the past with a Sixpoint canned beer. I am continually hopeful that Sixpoint will learn how to make ‘good’ beers at Lion Brewery. What is that old saying: hope springs eternal!?!

    Cheers!

I am familiar with the off flavors that diacetyl problems bring, but can somebody school me on how they emerge.
