    Hello all,

I just arrived here from Europe, and was surprised to almost only find IPA's, certainly in smaller stores..

I do like IPA's, don't get me wrong, but I also like diversity. In Europe, i particularly enjoyed Westmalle Triple, Chimay Bleu, Gulden Draak and Rochefort 8 (to name a few).

Anything that I would be able to find here that is not an IPA, and resembles some of those beers?

    Thanks!

Americans are very biased to their IPAs but there are plenty of options out there. Where are you and this group should be able to help you find some stores with a wider set of styles.

Allagash is New England's leading Belgian-inspired brewery. I would start out with them based on the beers listed above. They have a lot of Belgian styles and are widely available and do not disappoint in terms of quality.

Well, if you ever wanted Westmalle Triple or Gulden Draak, we have them at Madden Beverage in Saco Maine.

Where did you move to? All of those beers are pretty widely available.

Welcome! You are in the wrong country if you're looking for something other than an IPA :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for your replies : ) And Yeah, I know I could just get those beers here, but I'm simply looking for something new..

I'll definitely try the Allagash beers..

And perhaps this is a good moment to pick up home brewing again..

Ommegang is one the US's best Belgian-style breweries. If you're into beers like Chimay Bleu and Rochefort 8, be sure to check out Ommegang's "Abbey Ale" and "Three Philosphers"

Absolutely keep your eye out for Ommegang beers; Abbey Ale and Three Philosophers are two of my favorites, and both extremely easy to find.

Also, grab yourself some Spencer Trappist Ale (not the IPA they make now)...you'll really enjoy that one, and it's from the only Trappist brewery outside of Belgium. They're located in Spencer, MA.

Welcome to the US, and to New England!

It's certainly not a trip I'd make on a whim but, if I liked traditional brews, I'd want to check out Schilling in upper state NH.

Some other notable New England breweries who make good Belgian style beers: Mystic, Enlightenment, Cambridge Brewing, Oxbow, Hill Farmstead, OEC
Cambridge Brewing has multiple Belgian style bottles on the shelf in MA now: Triple Threat, Le Saisonniere
    and Morning Dew.

Unibroue's 'La Terrible' is a wonderful deal.

Actually anything by Unibroue is a good deal. They are also widely available.

Something else that you may want to try that is not Belgian are Jack's Abby lagers (but NOT the IPL's which are hoppy). The House Lager, Smoke and Dagger, Leisure Time, and Framinghammer are all non-hoppy offerings from them and are very nice takes on the various lager styles.

Thanks all for the new additions, I'll be sure to check those out

The Allagash beers are not bad, specifically the dubbel, but I was slightly disappointed by the triple (perhaps because I happen to really enjoy Westmalle, and was expecting something like that) and it does not have a long taste, drops off quite fast..

I also discovered 'the third glass' by Boulevard brewing, which is a heady quadruple, reminding me of La Trappe..

And DougC123, I'm in Medford.. why, and good recommendations for shops?

Redstone in Stoneham or Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont are good bottle shop options.

Nothing in particular for that area, but it certainly will help others to make suggestions local to you.

    Medford? Try Altas liquors too.

Medford should have access to any type of beer you like, I know Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont has at least one of the beers you named - Chimay Bleu. It's expensive, but they have a big selection of German and Belgian abbey beers. Heck, the grocery stores near you - the ones with liquor departments, at least - should have 'em too.

I would recommend you go to the CBC Belmont and talk to the people there. They know beer. Tell them what you like, they will find you the right beers for you.
