High Ryse tasted almost exactly like Saison Rue for me. Do a side by side, I'm telling ya.

Hopefully they start expanding their portfolio quickly...

Found a couple of different bottles at City Swiggers. Don't know if they were overcharging, but not worth $20 a bottle...

I'm pretty sure the mission statement there is 'overcharge everything'

Haha true story, but in CS's defense, I wouldn't buy a 750 ml bottle from an unknown brewery at anything more than 10-12 bucks, these guys are charging veteran brewery prices and it's insulting.

I will ask for a taste if I see em on draught, but honestly, it's a joke to ask for an ultra premium price and you have absolutely no cache or cred.

Unfortunately they're probably trading off all the good cred that the rest of the local scene has built up

@bgold86 The prices have gotten much worse at Swiggers in recent months. They were charging upwards of $10 for SingleCut IPAs.

I still haven't tried the stout but really liked the High Ryse. I have too many stouts at home and have been limiting random purchases.

I'm at City Swiggers a few times a week, most I've seen a Singlecut IPA was 7.99, quit bullshitting 10 dollars a bottle.

City Swiggers is definitely not cheap, one could argue overpriced, but guess what, walk into just about any store in NYC selling craft beer and be prepared to open your wallet! (Whose kidding who?!...)

A short story, it was perhaps 3 months ago, was at City Swiggers after work on a Thursday or Friday evening, they had just gotten in Captain's Daughter IPA. This guy picked up a 4 pack, went to check out, and was completely shocked at the 3 dollar or so price tag per can, so he went on to berate the guy behind the bar that the cans were priced 50 cents above what they should have been! After screeching and complaining like a 3 year old, he stomped out in a huff leaving the beer at the counter.

The entire place was frozen in shock and partial disgust.

As someone who is intimately aware of rent prices, insurance costs in the area etc I'm surprised City Swiggers doesn't charge MORE. The only way I figure they are cutting a profit is that they move a substantial amount of their bottles off the shelves, otherwise they would be out of business or close to it.

If someone wants to pay bottom dollar for craft beer in NYC, maybe only count WF as a place for you, and even then, you are not exactly getting a discount. Screw it, if you want to pay bottom dollar don't live in NYC, and most importantly craft beer is probably not for you.

But back to the thread, a quick beermenus search brings up this completely unknown brewery's bottles at $13-20, with many places averaging $15-16, this has nothing to do with City Swiggers, this has everything to do with a ridiculous starting price of a brewery's FIRST run!

Captain's Daughter at $3 a can would be the cheapest in the city, so I'm a little skeptical on that. On BM the absolute cheapest it is is $14/4 pk and that's at supermarkets. Average cost is around $4/can. Obviously causing a scene is out of line either way - unfortunately at non-supermarkets craft beer is just really expensive now.

I agree - bottle shop prices are unbelievable - shows there's a large group of people that will overpay to drink something hyped/trendy. I'm happy to get great beer regularly available from a distributer/supermarket and other stuff from a brewery direct.

We sampled a few bottles at work on Friday and someone brought a bottle of Vexed, was pretty lackluster and kind of odd with the Belgian yeast, we did not get any of the coffee, cacao, vanilla, cinnamon, and oak

They were selling Firestone Walker 19th Anni for $70 a bottle.

IMO, I would say Swiggers is overpriced, but only really out of control on a few offerings.

Recently CS had a couple of vintages of FW Anniversary for sale at pretty high prices (16 and 18, but not 19), and even though they were high they ran just about what I've seen everywhere else that held onto those beers.

Would I spend 69.99 for FW 16? Hell no...but someone did as the case they put out a few months ago was gone in a few days.

Is CS discount or affordable? No. Is living in NYC or buying large amounts of craft beer in NYC discount or affordable? No.

Most of their stuff is priced slightly higher than Brooklyn bottle shops, but that has to do with location/rent/insurance.

If you're used to shopping at Whole Foods for craft beer and then do some shopping at a bottle shop, regardless if it's CS, St Gambrinus, Malt & Mold etc, there is going to be a price difference.

I paid $9.49/bottle of Mo Shuggie Soulbender BEFORE tax and deposit at City Swiggers. You're always going to pay a premium at a bottle shop and in NYC, especially in Manhattan but that's almost 20% more expensive than you're saying they should be priced so please eat that bullsh!t.

Back to the actual thread, I'm going to pull the trigger on the Vexed just because I feel like to I have to give it a try and I'd love for them to publish what other beers they have in the pipeline for 2016.

I find some comical irony in a Disco Biscuits fan somehow having an issue with their name. I actually agree with you, your comment paired with your handle made me start laughing though. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Looking forward to trying their beers as that's what's important.
