And there are plenty of beer drinkers who know a lot about beer that are non-British and non-German.

    Cheers!

I guess, so long as "all" means 2 or 3!

In American beer jargon, the word "lager" is overburdened. That means it has more than one meaning.

Most of us think of "lager" as a type of beer (with "ale" being the other type), and that a lager is a cold-fermenting (bottom fermenting) beer, while ale is warm-fermenting (top fermenting) beer.

"To lager" is also a process that is applied to lager beer, from which it gets its name.

As @marquis likes to remind us, "ale" means something different in British beer history (as contrasted with a porter).

The modern era (at least in the USA) has categorized beer into either ales or lagers based on the fermenting temperature and yeasts, which leads to endless discussions on whether certain beers (such as Kölsch) are lagers or ales.

As usual, it comes down to silly Americans attempting to hammer a square peg into a round hole. Let's not even start on Altbier or (even worse) Belgian styles.

Eeh that's easy -- Altbier is Obergäriges Lagerbier just like Kölsch.

    Yeah verily!!

I posted the below in a previous thread:

“Earlier this evening I was at a local beer bar where they had an ‘event’ of a Kolsch weekend. They had five different draft beers from Cologne that were all served in 0.2 liter Stange glasses. I ordered all five of those German brewed beer and a re-order of my favorite: Sunner Unfiltered Kolsch beer (‘labeled’ as Sunner Kellerbier in Germany).”

    Cheers!

Drink fresh Kolsch in Cologne and you just might "get It". Reissdorf, Gaffel, and Sunner stateside are all quite good. These beers are subtle, with lots of character. They do not bash you over the head in the least. It's a very nice style unique to a small part of the world. I have yet to taste an American brewed Kolsch style that comes close to the Cologne brewed originals.

Kolsch originated as essentially an adjunct beer. Since the Reinheitsgebot prohibits use of unmalted grains, barley was allowed to just sprout (technically "malted") then immediately kilned before any real modification could occur. This so-called "chit" barley allowed brewers to produce a lighter-bodied beer than would have been possible with normal malts. That's why German Kolsch always has that grainy taste...it's basically a grain adjunct beer. I spent 30 months in Bavaria and we Americans there always considered Kolsch to be "Yankee beer". I guess we called it that because it was mainly brewed up north. Even today, I favor the Bavarian lagers over any of the Bremen/Dortmund/Koln beers, even though they are the most commonly found German beers around here.

There's a new brewery in the making in Columbia, SC with a brewmaster who loves Kölsch -- Check out Bierkeller Columbia.

My homebrewed Kolsch has just completed lagering earlier this week. The description of "subtle, with lots of character" fits this beer exactly!

A well brewed Kolsch is a bier of beauty!!

    Cheers!

Make the trip south and the first few are on us. We think all of our R & D has paid off. Little preview (cross-posted from the Germany forum). Prost!
