Not to derail the thread, but does this beer really not have much trade value? I didn't score a lot of it, but I would be lying if I said I wouldn't be willing to part with one or two if it gave me the opportunity to try something unique I haven't had. Either way, I would be more than happy to drink every ounce I got, but it would be nice to know.

    No one likes this beer.

But seriously: put it out there on the IP trade thread. Someone will bite.

LOL at thinking stores set limits so more customers can get the beer. They set limits to get more people in the store buying product (in your world: being "greedy"). They don't care who the person is, as long as they get them in the store. They'd probably rather have this guy's wife than some dude from 3 towns over who came there just for KBS and will never set foot in the store again.

The problem with this conversation is that limits are so arbitrary. I'm not "greedy" because I picked up the 1-case limit at a local store, but this guy is "greedy" because he got 2 4-packs instead of 1. Ok. Somebody's been listening to too much Bernie Sanders. Based on this logic, anyone taking more than one bottle from a shop at any time is being greedy. I'm all for sharing and beer karma, but the idea that someone getting 2 4-packs of KBS is being greedy is a bit insane.

I get that people think this is wrong but I don't think it fair to be called greedy. I could have gone back after work picked up another 4 pack. I could have asked my mother, father and grandparents to go too haha. I dont understand why people think this is makes her a mule though. She likes beer. Nobody got shut out, the whole foods got plenty of cases, they were trying to sell it to anyone they could. The cheese guy was trying to sell a 4 pack to an elderly gentleman picking up heineken. He was shocked that a 4 pack of beer was more than 20 dollars.

Thank you. The limit was 1 pack per person, not some random "household" limit bullshit. WF is my local shop. My girlfriend and I regularly buy beer there so I dont think its "greedy" pick up a limited release when they drop.

Just like with everything in life, we don't have to agree. For the record, I wasn't calling you specifically greedy, just the general behavior. If your gf likes beer, that's fine.

Disagree with almost everything you said. I know my beer guy sets limits to make sure his customers all get some if possible.

I get upset with how some people behave over beer too, and I probably should have worded my original post better.

Agree with you here. Limits are important in shops especially when they only receive a limited number of cases. Everyone should get to try new beer. Whole Foods has to set limits and keep things behind the counter to prevent people from picking up a case and checking out.

That being said I still dont understand this trend of grocery stores getting limited release beers. They tend to hoard it in the back for their regulars who only come in for beer. I don't think distributors should sell to the smaller grocery stores.

It's not un-trade-able but you're not going to get too much for it considering anyone "into" beer for a few years has definitely had it, and isn't going to give up something out of market or brewery only, for one or two bottles of KBS. ::open_mouth:pinion, could be wrong::

Looks like it'll trade for other limited shelf stuff. Seems like you could trade for Trillium bottles or other limited IPAs if you're into something like that: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/founders-kbs.404062/

Main Street Wine Cellars? I stopped in and the owner told me the same. I get that he wants to avoid people coming in, buy one bottle and never spendimg another dime in the store. I go there from time to time, but I refuse to buy an unwanted 15 pack to get one bottle. I would have passed even if he offered me 2 bottles.

Friend of mine went into a liquor store by him on Friday afternoon and asked if they had any KBS left. The response was, "Sure. What year?". Admittedly, the question locked up his brain so he stammered "Um...what?". The cashier said "Let me see what's in the back" and proceeds to return a few minutes later with 4 bottles, each with a year written on the bottle in silver sharpie. It was 1 of each of the last 4 years ('13-'16).

    $45 for the set.

He asked if there were more and the cashier told them there was one more set - thankfully he quickly phoned me and I of course, without even thinking about it, said yes I want the other one. Now, I haven't received the bottles yet, but when I spoke to him later that day he indicated that he couldn't find a bottled on date stamp on the '13 or '14 (as we know the '15 had the year on the label) so I guess It's possible that it is a lie, but I highly, highly doubt it (seems unlikely to me that the store would hold a couple of '15s with the long con being "let's package it with 3 next year and say it is a 4 year vertical and make a relatively small profit").

I never understand why a four year vertical should be priced any higher than four single bottles. We're paying them extra to store it for us? I guess I shouldn't be drinking my last 2014 at this very moment.

Chiming in as a buyer to say I set limits entirely so more people can get the beer.

Eh, I can see a mark up for a merchant saving space to create a vertical. Space is limited, so it's easier to move a product now rather than later. With that said, if you're charging a 100% markup, then you're an asshole (or HIGHLY in demand), if it's 20%, then it's totally reasonable.

Sierra Nevada is selling six year verts of Bigfoot at the brewery for $25. That's a 70% markup on the $10 four packs at my my local shop.

I thought Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is sold in 4 packs? So selling a 6 pack vert at a price point of ~$4 ($2.25 regular shelf 4-pack) a bottle is a 60% mark-up. I'm not sure what your point/view is, but I don't see a problem with it.

Yeah $25 for a six year vertical seems cheap... I'd expect more like 40.

    Check your math.

$2.25*1.79=~$4.00. The markup is actually 79% (not 60%). Which is closer to your 100% cutoff qualifying them as assholes than it is your 20% point of reasonability.

(My starting point was $2.50, thus the markup was ~70%, as stated, based on my starting point.)

And yes, Bigfoot is (now) sold in four packs. The vertical packs they are selling are six packs, like the old days.

Why would you expect to pay $40 for $15 worth of beer that's just been sitting in their warehouse for years? There's a sucker born every minute I guess.
