I have a pound of wet Amarillo hops due in this week. The whole pound will of course go in the very last stages of the boil. Question - How much wort should i expect a pound of wet hops will absorb? Do I need to compensate by increasing the volume of my boil substantially? Or, since the hops are already "wet," do they not absorb as much wort as a comparable pound of dried hops?
I don't have a precise answer to your question, but note that when hops are dried they loose about 80% of their weight, meaning that 16 oz of wet hops is really only equal to just over 3 oz of dried hops, and 3 oz of dried hops wouldn't absorb THAT much wort. In other words, a lb of wet hops isn't like adding a lb of dried hops to your kettle, it's more like adding 3-3.5 oz of dried hops to your kettle.
Right, as I suspected with the wet weight : dry weight ratio. Thanks for the input. Wet weight aside, however, it just feels like all that hop matter ought to hold on to more water than 3oz of dried hops...
Wet hops don't absorb too much in my experience. It's more than pellets, but not as much as dry whole leaf hops. Since they are already "wet" they don't take in too much liquid. Its more of a volume displacement than the amount of absorption you get from dried whole leaf.
