True. Especially i live in the pinelands and if a trooper sees you litter its up to $10,000 dollar fine in some areas posted.

Pilsner Urquell describes their beer as having honey suckle, and their malt profile having caramel notes from triple decoction.

"Earthy, fresh bread aroma with hints of hops and honeysuckle."

"Subtle malty sweetness with caramel tones from our open-flame triple decoction."

Somewhat limited distro, but for those on the West Coast, this is a great option:

I was just about to post this. We have recently rebranded this however and the new packaging will be hitting shelves soon. It is now called Wheels Up: Helles Lager but will only be available in bottles and only seasonal. Sorry fellas.

Thanks for the info, but bummed that it won't be canned. Such a great beach beer!

Cans are not really popular in germany,
Or well, not in the "mid-price" range. Cans are really all the rage with really cheap supermarket beers. Maybe because when you need your 5-10 beers a day, cans are easier to carry...

So: I had Löwenbräu and Pauler Hell from a can. Not bad, nothing to write home about, aviable in a lot of places in and around bavaria, Paulaner munich Hell und Hefeweizen in a can can be found basically everywhere, the latter even in very cheap supermarkets...
Speaking of cheap supermarket beers, you will find Helles there. Own-brand Helles, brewed in Frankfurt-Oder, for instance, for 25 cents/0,5l on offer......

Sly Fox Helles is sold in NJ, but, yeah - not with the 360 can lids.

It is unfortunate how Sly Fox's distribution (statewide, via Hunterdon) seems to be lacking - even as the popularity of craft in cans is growing. Sly Fox was one of the first canned craft brands in the state, but it's difficult to find a good selection or fresh stock. (I'm sure my local "A" rated retailer still had "Best by Dec __" Pikeland Pils last time I checked.) I've gotten the impression that Hunterdon and SF have had a "rocky" relationship. When I cross the Delaware to beer shop, I always hope to bring back a "suitcase" of fresh Pikeland or Helles...

It has nothing to do with the general enforcement of anti-litter laws (otherwise breweries couldn't sell beer bottles with twist-off crowns that can - and are - just as easily removed and thrown out the car window) - it is a specific regulation banning carbonated beverage cans with "removal" openings. Many states banned "flip top/ring pull" cans in the 1970s, often in conjugation with bottle/can deposit laws (which, of course, never passed into law in NJ) - which led to today's near universal non-detachable "Sta-Tab" cans.

The main place I can get Sly Fox these days is Total Wine, and it's the same way. I really need to check the dates. Getting year old Sofie or Traquair is very nice, Sly Fox not so much.

If I can get some reasonably fresh ones it might be a good time for a blind canned Helles tasting. We'll see...

Is that direct from Urquell, or from some SAB Miller marketing promo? Because it sounds like someone trying to describe melanoidin character, but not finding the right words.

At least my TW does a good job on the seasonals, and keeps them separated from the regular stock.

Good catch. I haven't had Wonder Bread in quite some time, but when I think white bread, I think the white part inside the bread, separate from the crust, freshly baked. This is close to what I get with Pils malt I believe.

From their website. It does sound like marketing, but I was really bored the other day and thoroughly enjoying some fresh Pilsner Urquell while reading their web site. Most of the site seems informative and was interesting. Maybe it's suggestive marketing on their part, but I do get a caramel-like sweetness in the middle. Could be some diacetyl as well, which I sometimes subtly detect in their beer.

Another vote for Sly Fox Helles here. Just a great Helles! However, I have had trouble finding it fresh lately in NJ, or with a legible date on the bottom of the can. The past dozen or so times I have picked up a 6-pack to look at the date it has been either badly smeared or non-existent. Anyone else having the same experience?

Yeah I hear ya, I liked the cans also. It would have been sweet to can them in 16oz like we are now doing with Orange Wheat and Betty but you can always grab some crowlers from the Tasting room.

    Cheers brotha!

Here in Texas, we have a pretty solid canned helles with this:

Though is is labelled a pils, the brewery describes it as a helles and it certainly drinks much more like a helles than a pils. And, if it means anything, the beer has won several GABF awards in the munich-style helles category. Very refreshing & clean, and this year is the first in which it is being canned.

If you ever make it up to Vermont I would check out Lost Nation Vermont Pilsner and Zero Gravity's Green State Lager. Both are categorized as pilsners but I wouldn't let that stop you. Both are excellent and Green State Lager didn't hit me as very hoppy as I recall. Also it was in 12oz cans but that wouldn't stop me either.

Lost Nation Vermont Pilsner had what I would call that Bavarian depth of malt character I look for in light lagers. Looks to be in infrequent rotation there unfortunately.

With any luck Notch will start canning their kellerbier that I've heard so much about on draft, once they open the new brewery.

I'm drinking a Ninkasi Helles Belles that I poured from a can right now. Never a big fan of the style in general, but I am quite enjoying this,

Actually "Tampa-Style" Lager and it's still a helles. If anything it's more on-target, a little less sweet than HtH.

This is an excellent style that deserves more attention. I'm not sure about the distribution, but Surly Hell is an outstanding beer. Victory's version is also very good. The last couple years I've had quite a few Leinenkugal's hoppin helles, which they now call Helles yeah. It has a stupid name but it's a nice hot weather beer. I'm not sure how close it is to an authentic Helles though.

Tivoli Helles was always one of my favorite Colorado beers. If they started canning that one I will definitely be bringing some of that one back down to NM with me next month when I am back visiting Denver.

Copper Kettle cans a Helles. Never had it to know if its any good.

(Definitely a fan of the style and would welcome more into the market.)
