I'm taking a week off from beer next week because I'm having some medical testing done at week's end. To set my temperance off in style I found the last 6 pack of Hofbräu's Winter Spezial in my county (at a spot that I never knew had it, no less). And my wife has promised to make our special Rouladen recipe on Sunday -- the HB ought to be the perfect accompaniment.

Enjoying the Spezial from my .25l HB clay krug. It's tasting slightly oxidized, but the big, rich malt is still center stage; big dark bread crust character with that sweet, molasses-like character touching right at the end.

Cry -- 8.4 ABV -- I'd forgotten. And the beer hides its heft all too well. Prosit! All.

I had a Weissenohe Monk’s Fest served on cask (hand pump) last evening at a local beer bar. It was a pleasant beer to drink. It was amber in color with a prominent malt backbone. Being served from the cask provided a nice soft mouthfeel.

Below is a description from the Shelton Brothers website:

    “Weissenohe Monk’s Fest

    Klosterbrauerei Weissenohe • Germany

German Märzen beer – hearty, amber-colored, malty, and finely balanced lager that is refreshing and filling all at once – was the original staple of Oktoberfest celebrations. The Monk’s Fest comes to us from the beautiful monastery at Weissenohe, in the green wooded hills of Franconia, northern Bavaria. This rare, traditional, and very tasty ‘liquid bread’, is as close as you can get to the real thing.”

    Cheers!

I have not seen that beer in any of my local beer stores. The labeling reminds me of Generic Beer that used to be available in the States.

    Cheers!

Well, it's 16.30 here in southern NH.... cloudless blue sky above, gentle breeze, about 70F.... Sitting out in The 'Zebo where I just enjoyed a Vitus and am now getting into a Korbinian while listening to some classic rock (Pink Floyd right now).... Ahhhhh.... Zum Wohl!

'Bout to have a Summit Maibock myself. Around 76° here in N. Eastern Illinois -- winter's back may be broken.

True. And where I live it's always hot. So lots of this usually on tap. I'm very popular, as you can imagine...

    Thread resuscitation!

Drinking a Hofbräu Original. I have a local that carries the half liter bottles and it's on a straight line with my route home at night. Like to stop now and again to see what they have new and grab a 500ml bottle when nothing else is inviting.

With the slow decline of Spaten availability in my area, the HB Helles is fast becoming my favorite Bavarian go-to. Malty good with the right balance of hops in the finish to give it a crisp mouthfeel. The only thing better is having this fresh on tap straight from Munich (often available at HB franchise taverns in the U.S.).

Traveled out of my way to find Hofbräu Maibock today and think it was worth the trip; very fresh, bready and smooth -- tasting somewhat cleaner than I'm used to with the HB Maibock -- probably due to the freshness. Has a nice sweet, bready maltiness with a spicy finish -- from hops and probably alcohol. Quite the nice rendition.

Oh, and @spartan1979 -- they offered up the free HB custom Willi Becher for a 6 pack purchase. Would have only received one if I hadn't pointed out I was buying two 6 packs. :grinning: I'll probably use them as gifts for a couple beer-drinking friends.

Sick glass. Thx for the reminder, too, as I just bothered to check my local's inventory and saw both this and Summerfest hit in the last week. Looks like a trip to the store is in order!

There's one spot in my area with Summerfest, so far. Since the Maibock is a little on the heavy side, and I only have 3 bottles of Oberon left (good gosh, I always like that beer in Spring), I may have to take another side trip toward the end of the week!

To the glass: I received one of them as swag for judging a home-brew contest many years back -- always a favorite go-to, and works great for Weizen too. Funny to see how beat up mine looks compared with these new ones!

Pick up that Summerfest as fast as you can, it was drinking great this past weekend, better than I've ever remembered. I also picked up Troegs Sunshine Pils which is out now as well. These were both about a month old, can't beat that. As much as I love imports, they're virtually impossibly to find that fresh in the US.

A few other local Pils were consumed/are still kicking around my fridge from the weekend. And to bring it back on topic, I did have the Schlenkerla Fastenbier on tap this past weekend as well. I liked the two bottles I had better, but those came out awhile ago, so maybe it wasn't as fresh on tap. Still very solid though. The Cultivator I had from Troegs was great too, but sadly was only one of two Maibocks that I've had this season. Haven't seen the Hofbrau Maibock in Boston.....until this Saturday that is.

That's a link to the 500th Anniversary party of the purity law that my local bar is throwing. I'll be rocking the Hofbrau Maibock and the Monschoff Kellerbier on tap, as the other offerings, while good, are on tap fairly often around my area.

Any food (and drink too I suppose) suggestions are encouraged!

Gotta hand it to SN - the beers are very good and affordable. When on sale, $6.99-7.99/6pk. I'll be watching for the Summerfest and I've been meaning to try the Otra Vez Gose...

Hmm, Cultivator sounds like a Doppelbock to me, wonder why they named it that?
Love to hear a comparison to the Weihenstephaner 1516.
