I thought you were being a jokester with your bigger and closer comment. That'll teach me to "like" things before reading ahead...

This batch might seem ancient to you time traveling scalawags but it tastes pretty darn good.

There will be batch variation from year-to-year in just about any beer, but I think memory variation exaggerates those differences more than they actually are. Your palate is not a static thing and will change continuously. My favorite beers two years ago differ from my favorite beers today by quite a margin.

Yes, some variation should come into account, however my palate is quite memorable and knows how to detect off and artificial flavors. I'm not looking for these types of replies, just opinions on how other people feel about this batch. I love coffee stouts and coffee for that matter.... if I had a bad coffee I would say the same thing... and also I typically love founders breakfast stout and most of their other beers as well. I'm not hating just wondering here.

Did a side by side with this years batch (bottled-08-06-12) versus last years of (09-5-11) tonight. This years was much more coffee forward in the nose with a better balance and overall drinkability. Now, that's not to say that last years was better when it was fresh than this years...that is impossible to say with palate fatigue/adaptability.

Honestly, this thing fresh drinks like a champ...creamy, chocolaty, and smooth. Don't know about how your bottle/pics ended up looking like they are from the future, but I will say this: FBS is a simple and stellar stout, especially when fresh and you certainly can't complain about the price at 9 bucks a 4 pack!

I've really enjoyed FBS the past couple years when I've had it. I haven't gotten the new batch yet but will soon. I had a Frangelic Mountain Brown and thought the coffee flavor in it seemed artificial. Maybe they have changed something in how they add coffee to the brewing process. Maybe I've never had FBS as fresh and I had FMB. Curious to try fresh FBS now.

Yes, This is what I was thinking... or just the coffee bean / brand / region / roast used. This batch seems more like Folgers then La Colombe!

it's my favorite beer, I keep as much to last me all year round until the new batch comes. I'm on my 2nd 4-pack of this year's batch. tastes as delicious as always to me.

You can send your future beer down here to Texas if you hate the way it tastes. I'll test it myself

Had two last night, if there's anything a miss I can't tell. IMO it is as always, and that is really good.

I will enjoy some tonight, or as some here may refer to it "the future". While having enjoyed this numerous times before, I will do my best to invalidate the original premise of it being thinner, and artificial.

However, now that the suggestion of those two have been implanted in my head by a time-travelling poster, anything is possible.
