My dad is my brew-buddy. He recently picked up a spray-bottle of oxy-clean 'for stainless steal', because it was all 'they' had at whatever store he went to. Presumably this is a great choice for our kettle, but does anyone know if it is good to use on plastic? It does specifically* say on the bottle 'and other surfaces'.

I would say yes, it should be fine…but as always with oxy/pbw, give it a good rinse with hot water and then hit it with an acid-sanitizer. I do prefer a proper soaking though in oxy/pbw compared to a spray. Spray is fine for the sanitizer after it's all clean, but if you can, get a big bag of oxyclean or, much better if you have moderate or hard water, PBW, and soak for a good half hour or so for a proper cleaning of organic deposits.

    Link to the PBW?

Any homebrew store should sell PBW...from what I remember it can be made out of Oxiclean and TSP substitute.

So with my hard water, I am better off with PBW as opposed to oxiclean? Did not realize this.

I have made that combo but I forget the ratios. TSP being tri sodium phosphate. I think I used TSP Free whatever the difference was I do not remember.

Yeah, I used to do PBW every third batch, oxyclean the rest of the time…but the difference between the two was pretty surprising in terms of efficacy, so now use PBW every batch. PBW gets the equipment back to a new shine in places I can see, which is comforting for all those places I can't see. I'm at like 270ppm bicarbonates.

I was also under the impression pbw is alkaline, while star San is an acid and oxyclean is simply neutral. Somehow I think the one two low pH high pH combo would be more effective from a sanitation stand point as well.

Thanks for that. I will have to try PBW!

I've used their growler tabs (freebies from last year's NHC) and they worked well. Also use plenty of National Chem's products so would hope they know what they're doing, but have never used that specific one. Maybe get some at this year's NHC, saw they're sponsoring again…
And brew_betty, you could buy a 50# bucket for it too…if you set up an LLC, you might get for cheaper!

It costs about $1000 to set up an LLC in IL plus annual fees. My break even amount is measured in tons. I think I'll stick with retail.

From what I can gather from the msds ...almost all cleaners (regardless of brand) are roughly 2:1 Oxiclean chemical:TSP/TSP substitute. So if you want to save $, buy some generic oxiclean and TSP substitute in bulk and mix them yourself.
