My friend said his shop is getting a Pipeworks "hoppy imperial stout" in soon. Looking forward to this -- what's the name?

I think he means ONLY for this week, after that a week the remaining bottles go on the shelf?

I dont want to distract from the topic but I believe this is not an accurate statement. I do agree that berliner weisse is not typically an "uber" sour style-wise. However, the syrup (by all accounts that I have read) was historically used to make the tartness of the brew more palateable for those who didnt like the sourness. It wasnt necessarily added to increase complexity of the brew for lack of malt or hop inclusion. That mindset in my humble opinion is very much americanized.

I'm praying to God "Tinley" wasn't a typo for "Lincoln".

Obviously there's no "Tinley" binny's... but I hope to god you somehow meant Orland.

I wouldn't take their webshop 'Add To Cart/Out Of Stock' as gospel re: what is available on shelves. It could just as easily be that they are waiting to make sure it doesn't sell out immediately before they offer it to online customers. Unless the item is struckthrough on the What's New page, I generally take it to mean that it's still in stock.

Like I said, I bought three last night, at around 8-9PM. If you really want to be certain before driving out of your way, they do answer their phones. They can probably hold things back for you if you're worried that it will sell out as you are driving.

While you're correct, I don't believe you can objectively rule out the additional flavor reasoning, as mixing it will a light lager, as often quoted, would offset the sourness. The syrups commonly used are in a variety of flavors, obviously, and chosen for a reason.

Without syrup wouldn't it just be soured wheat and lacto.I mean historically your probably right, but I think lacto and wheat (with minimal or zero hops) wouldn't be much to enjoy. Not a complexity issue I guess, so your right but I think all these breweries are making double versions or adding fruit because otherwise its a soured 312 (which I had one with Brett this weekend that i enjoyed so again I'm way wrong.). Did you try the snarling badger double Berliner? It was pretty good and enjoyable but a pretty simple flavor profile.

My bigger point was for people to not go into this thinking that the style is a gueuze or lambic, which I think some might when they see the word sour.

Your last sentence I am 100% in agreement with. I facepalm when I read negative reviews about berliner weisse because the reviewer mentions them not being sour "enough."

This is a topic we could really go back and forth on debating. Some write-ups about berliner weisse claim it was a brew that was consumed young before any sourness had a chance to set in. Other accounts relay information stating some barrels were buried and aged for a year before taping to let it develope.

Why cant wheat and lacto be enough? Wheat, barley and the variance of yeast alone is what makes a hefeweizen a hefeweizen or a saison a saison or even a dunkel weizen a dunkel weizen?

To answer your question, no i havent had the snarling badger but ive had many others including the lips of faith berliner and southampton uber berliner which are esserially "imperial" versions of the style. I can attest that normal berliners such as baynof berliner and their lambicus version are twice as tasty as complex with half the alcohol level.
Touche! You make a great point.
