    Say what, brother???

    Quaff
    [kwof, kwaf, kwawf]

    verb (used without object)
    1.
to drink a beverage, especially an intoxicating one, copiously and with hearty enjoyment.

    verb (used with object)
    2.
to drink (a beverage) copiously and heartily:
We spent the whole evening quaffing ale.

Never heard it used in any urban slang way.... maybe it's a young-uns thing....

    Prosit!

Most people use the term drink instead of quaff to avoid sounding like a pretentious snob. That was my only point.
    Quaff on

To most people in my nape of the woods it's a term used by the hoi polloi, the common folk... Again, ymmv...

    Zum Wohl!

do you have any more bullshit words that most people here won't comprehend in order to make yourself feel superior?

Well, I remember quaff being a term from the original text based computer adventure games (maybe Zork)... so I don't think of it as a term to make someone feel superior but maybe more of an age based thing?

Growing up in New England, I also remember the term hoi polloi so that might be more of a regional thing.

Additionally, I guess I don't think of the folks that were playing games like Zork as pretentious snobs...

@hopnado How do you feel about the term hoighty toighty? Also something that I grew up hearing frequently in Mass. in the late 1970s through early 1990s (then I moved away and learned different phrases that were common regionally).

I think a hoighty toighty person would use the word quaff instead of drink

I definitely see your point there. Here's the thing though. Say I buy, I don't know, a Belgian ale for $6 per 12 oz bottle. Say that this price is confirmed to be the norm for most states in the USA, with it being a tad higher even in some places. If that beer winds up just tasting average, when I can get similar beers that taste either just as good, or better, for less than half the price, shouldn't that factor in?

Well, my feeling is that since the pricing of a beer is determined by several things, e.g., whether imported or not, the cost of shipping, the mark up by some retailers, etc. I'd say price should not affect the ratings because those costs are pretty much beyond the control of the brewer. By the time you buy a beer you are basically the fourth owner of that bottle of beer. What I find is important to know is the nature of the beer since the price I'm willing to pay and the value of the beer are decisions I have to make. If two beers are reviewed to be comparble in flavors, etc. I wouldn't even by the more expensive one in the first place simply by using the price on the shelf.

That said, I don't think there's a problem with someone mentioning the price somewhere in the comments and/or that there are other less expensive versions that they prefer, but since the price I pay for any beer here in PA is different (handling costs, taxes on the retailer, etc.) than the price in NJ or DE I don't think that price someone somewhere else should be held against the beer itself and reflected in the ratings.

Also since I can easily find price estimates online that are probably more current than can be found in any review more than about six months old, I don't see that even mentioning the price adds value to a review itself. My first case of Sofie was purchased solely on the strength of the reviews by two different reviewers i have found to have tastes similar to mine, one was in KY and the other was in NC, each review was more than a year old. Any price those two had listed for their beer wouldn't be applicable to what I would have to pay here. Also, since I shop around at 3-4 places I pretty much know which place is going to be the most expensive. If each of those two guys had paid a lot and had also devalued the beer because they thought they had paid too much for it, I would probably have missed out an excellent beer.

I personally wouldn't want to see prices. The difference by country and retailer could be quite significant anyway so I don't see the point. If you want to get a sense of the price of a beer, just Google it
