    Beer #2

    Forgotten Boardwalk Morro Castle.

This is a smoked porter. Brewed and canned by Forgotten Boardwalk in Cherry Hill, NJ. I love every beer they make. And they all come with carnival/folklore esque stories that are true to an extent if you choose to believe. The luxury ship, morro castle, in 1934, traveling from NY mysteriously caught fire. Causing 137 passengers to perish. Crowds rushed to witness the inferno at sea while it burned for days on the shore of asbury park in Monmouth county. Murder and arson were suspected but the truth remains unknown. Thats the story on the can. Flavors of coffee, dark chocolate and tobacco are present. Tobacco as in if youve ever smelled a can of Copenhagen or Grizzly Straight. Sweet and aromatic pipe tobacco. Nicely layered. Not thin. An excellent beer right here in NJ. Personally i love the jersey shore lore as i went to high school in Matawan while living in Cliffwood Beach. There used to be a boardwalk along that shore that was taken out by a hurricane in the 60s. All that remains is some wooden post in the bay and the base of an Olympic sized pool in which nature has taken over. And believe me when i say that because ive found that pool as a teenager, you can still see the concrete under all the brush and dunes and trees. Forgotten Boardwalks stories of their beer relate to me as i love folklore and the shore.

    Cheers.

I think I could live off of Union, Burly Oak, and RAR for a month. Union sends a large enough portfolio of solid stuff into distro for me not to get bored. I think I'd have to make some trips to the Eastern Shore to grab something other than Secret Sauce and Nanticoke Nectar, though. Not bad beers, but I'd want to drink something other than IPAs.

agree. MD distro is not good. though making monthly trips to RaR is making up for it. and had the burley oak fruits of our labor sours recently, and were quite tasty.

It would be pretty nutty if you drank only Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan for a month straight.

There is enough variety and goodness with DFH that I could do this for a year if I so chose, and not get bored.
I think most states now have good local beer. The only reason/need to go outside this is simply the quest for variety.

The only thing nutty about drinking beer is not drinking it.

I've liked RaR Nanicoke Nectar IPA (thought the other brews I sampled at the brewery was just so/so, and most of the Burley Oak stuff has all been solid. Distribution in bottles/cans over on the Western Shore of MD of both these breweries has been spotty though. All I get is Nanicoke Nectar in cans from RaR. Burley Oak is better. I get Sorry Chicky cans, Waffle Stomp, Rude Boy and I think their IPA from them. Also seen Sour Trip bottles for about $20 which seems a little overpriced/quality IMO. That's only one I've seen on shelves I think. It's an ok sour, but many better choices available at the $20 price. But for Maryland, they are pretty much the only brewery doing BA wild ales/sours right now.

Agree DFH has excellent variety of high quality beers, both low/mid/high ABV and styles all over the map. I could live ok for a year just with their brews alone with no trouble. You also have Mispillion that does some good brews if DFH isn't sufficient.

We have an upstairs apartment in our house that we rent out on AirBnB. I always put 4 assorted Yazoo beers in the fridge for each new guest. Yazoo has a really great 6 pack holder return reward. 50 holders will get you a case of beer, 75 a 1/6 barrel keg. Makes it an easy decision to stay local.

Well, for me, drinking local is defined by where I like to go - Victory or Weyerbacher are only 5.5 - 6 hours away, Great Lakes, Brew Kettle, Thirsty Dog, and Hoppin Frog about 2 hours, and Jester King only 23 hours. The hardest part is not drinking for the 23 hours to JK.

I can do that for NY. I'm from Buffalo so I'll do it from the state, not the city.

Resurgence, Ommegang, Southern Tier, Ithaca, Genesee, CB, Lake Placid, Ellicotville, Big Ditch, Flying Bison.

A few years back, Mrs Lizard and I stayed at Rogue in Newport for a couple of nights. We found three bombers of Rogue brews in the reffer in the apartment when we arrived - a nice gesture!

I s'pose I could do MD-only for a month: RAR, Union, Burley Oak, Manor Hill, Monocacy, Calvert, and Evolution all have solid stuff, Flying Dog's core beers are tasty, and even the blind squirrel known as DuClaw finds an acorn every so often. Driving from SOMD to Cambridge for RAR can releases would suck, and the lack of imperial stouts not named Brewtus or Gonzo (imperial porter, but whatever) sucks even more.

Still, I could almost drink nothing but Manor Hill Grisette for a month.

I say this while being spoiled off my ass staying in Asheville, literally next door to Wicked Weed.

Though in fairness, if I still limited my drinking to just drinking Asheville beers for a month, I'd probably become a raging alcoholic.

Nanticoke Nectar is the only beer they put into distro (Groove City should be going out as well pretty soon). I do see more from Burley Oak (Rude Boy, Bulletproof Tiger, Sorry Chicky). I could not justify spending $20 for a bottle of Sour Trip when it's an in-state beer that is only 4% ABV. From what I have had from Burley Oak, most of it is rather hit or miss. I sampled quite a few of their sours at Max's Belgian Beer Fest and found myself underwhelmed by most of them.
