To help muddy the waters -- I consumed one of my bottles two days ago, and I was absolutely looking for the reported off-flavors. I found nothing but an insatiable thirst for more BCBS.

I agree there is some bias. I do not agree that we need to go to the lengths that you describe though. Most people on here aren't trying to determine what the actual cause is (infection, contamination, whatever) - they are just stating their observations that there is something off with their bottle(s) of BCBS this year. Everyone on this thread has consumed BCBS, often for years. We are well aware what it normally tastes like. Spritzy cherry, sour cherry, etc. are not flavors that occur as a result of normal variation or oxidation. If people talk about it being slightly off, I'll accept that it could just be bias. But for more severe variations, I don't think you need to be a trained expert to know that something is not right.

The fact is, many of the beers that have off flavors very clearly do not meet GI's own descriptions of what BCBS should taste like. GI's website states: "The nose is an intense mix of charred oak, chocolate, vanilla, caramel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer." Nothing about tart cherry. No previous vintages of BCBS had tart cherry.

Now, if you're saying we need experts to determine the exact cause, that's accurate. There's a lot of speculation on here about whether it was caused by infection or something else. I don't think anyone is trying to definitively say what it was. The only thing people are definitively saying is there is something very wrong with some of these beers.

    Yes.

For what it's worth, I always thought BCBS tasted like a chocolate covered cherry.

That made me laugh. I'm sorry, man. I just do not like reading in general. I've only read The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring outside of school assignments.

I'm not an expert for sure but just wanted to post my experience so far. I had 3 bottles of regular 2015 when it was first released and compared to how those tasted and the bottle of 2015 that was bottled on 10/21 i opened just a few days ago there was definitely some sour cherry taste to it that wasn't there earlier in the year from the first 3.

They may not have said specifically that the cherries were "tart" or "sweet" but They did say BCBS Cherry Rye was made with Michigan Cherries. There are actually more acres of "tart" cherries in Michigan than Sweet by like 5x over. Also "tart" cherries are not actually tart and they are closely related to sweet cherries.

It is an assumption and a guess that more than likely were tart cherries in that beer than sweet. Or it was a mix of both.

Its just that they are easier maintence and as they self fertile and self pollenizer. So bees can be used for Pollination.

Drinking a 10/21 right now. Had one of my bad BW last night, this is definitely on its way there. Drink em if you've got em, especially if they're from October. I wouldn't take the risk! If you have the means, test the pH as you go and let Goose know, because I've seen it test at 3.9 already.

That's really interesting, can you elaborate a bit on that? I remember when the 'Sisters' were a Chicago exclusive and I hunted them down on my travels and that first batch of madame rose just blew me away.

Thats silly, lacto does not pitch tart cherry flavors.
Also, I cracked open my last bottle of BSBS last night. There is a distinct cherry tartness on the backside that really gets that twang going in my jaw. 30oct15 814 14.3% alcohol. I still have half a case of 14, gonna open one tonight just to see...
