I think Excelsior Brewing has improved since DuVernois has left.

Maybe it's time to post a separate thread for obvious shills?

Seamus, Craigerss, and Kiddvideo could give each other Sporty's, Shorewood Liquor, and Blackstack updates, respectively, and when another one shows up we just funnel them on over there to keep the clutter out of other threads..

I'm pretty sure they have JVNW stuff (what looks to be a beautiful system).

I'm not sure where JVNW manufactures their stuff though. But frankly, I'd be surprised if Jay didn't get US built everything. He's super conscious about environmental stewardship and sustainability.

    Hello,
I was tipped to this conversation and I wanted to give you a quick update. Utepils Brewing as been working diligently to move from planning to brewing and as with a large scale brewery project there are many hurdles. We keep jumping them and on Thursday morning we will have our formal "ground breaking" ceremony with the stereotypical gold shovels but we've been cutting concrete for days now to expose some dirt to dig.

Our website is www.UtepilsBrewing.com and if there is a way to share a Facebook page with non Facebook users, I would happy to do so, I just don't know how.

Our goal is to have beer available later this summer/fall but it really depends upon contractors, govt agencies, and fate.

And as a point of pride, our brewer was the lead brewer at Summit and prior was a lead brewer with New Glarus Brewing respectively the #20 & #29 largest craft brewers in the USA. Our Bavarian made brewhouse features technology never before used in North America and when re-assembled, will be the sixth largest brewhouse in MN.

As demand grows, we will easily be able to scale up by simply adding to our cellar.

And, our MemBEERship™ is a heck of a deal; and we believe uniquely in the US, it is transferrable so if you move, die, or get bored with us, you can sell, will, or gift it.

JVNW builds everything just south of Portland, OR.

I was there a week ago Friday & my entire taster was exceedingly bland, all with the same slightly sweet taste to it. Not bad, but not good by any stretch of the imagination. So if they've improved, it must be incremental. On the other hand, the place was full, so who am I to criticize?

I agree it's been incremental progress and they had no where to go but up but it's better. Excelsior still has a ways to go IMHO and as you stated their taproom is usually very popular. Their Customers seem to be a lot of macro drinkers who drink up the light tasting blond ale.

That coffee stout wasn't bad. That's one taproom that is getting by on location, though.

Sounds awesome, I look forward to it! Do you plan on offering this membership once the brewery is open, so there's a chance to check out the beers before purchasing? Or is this like some of the others and only available before the opening?

    Hey from Kale at Modist

Thank you for the reviews of the beers and taking the time to check the place out. Just wanted to clear up that yes the foam pads on the underside of the tables (and chairs) are for sound deadening and are made out of crushed denim not fiberglass so dont worry about touching them. Im not sure about the mirror thing in the bathroom (mens and womens set up the same just stalls instead of urinals). If you use the mirror when in line I guess you could look through the crack and see someone.

We do have Smoove (caramel sea salt lager) on tap now and are working on getting the rest of the beers out there. Have to wait for the yeast to do it's work and make sure the beers is ready to serve to the masses!

Everyone here definitely appreciates the patience. I look forward to coming back in a few weeks to try the rest of the lineup. The mirrors definitely don't matter in the men's room. My girlfriend was mostly weirded out because her and the person in the stall next to her accidentally made eye contact.

Well, I've made a decision. I'm going to hit up u4ic tomorrow. I just have to try their Summer Smoke Hefeweizen. Not an easy decision, but I still haven't finished off the 3 growlers/crowlers/howlers I got there last week. I won't have a lot of time there (all depends on how long the family cemetery board meeting lasts), but will give my take on it, for what it's worth.

I looked over their beers on their website. Look interesting. But their Corn Crib IPA has this description:"This is an American IPA, so it is subtle on the hops and very well balanced. The hop notes are citrus with a malty character and not as bitter. NOT a bop bomb."

My question. Aren't American IPA's known for having more hops? or have we subcategoried that to be just West Coast IPA's? Personally I think of English IPA's as being more balanced but maybe they used American hops and didn't want to describe it that way.
