Dark Lord Day 2016

Right, I mean my point was that if you're an attendee, either someone dragged you there, or else, most likely you really want to be there...so to value cash more than the variant is just over my head. I didn't mean to come off as a dick, it's his choice.

But if you don't believe that 45* in non-stop rain, mud puddles, line standing and hourly portopotty visits is any form of suffering, not even the slightest inking, cheers to you. I can't even pretend to act like I would have liked for it to suck just a little less.

 

I thought it was fucking awful, honestly, but that's mostly because I was in line for 3+ hours, and stopped drinking beer about halfway through (because I was going to have to piss, and I'll be goddamned if I was taking any chances jumping out of line for something as pedestrian as a bodily function). My chore for the next 12 months is to convince my girlfriend that next year will be better, so that she signs off on us going again.

 

LMFAO! Mine already said hell no, not again. If I am lucky enough to go next year, the road trip may be a solo one, but I'll still have plenty of old friends to meet on the other side .

 

Just read all the posts (well, from Friday to now from where I left off). I think i had the worst experience so far, at least posted.

This was my first DL Day. i tried to not be noobish, but Shit happens (more on that later).

First off, I was group E and was driving in from Nebraska. I didn't get in line until around 3ish. Line wasn't bad, maybe 20-30 minutes to get in. I brought beer to share but forgot a cup, so there was mistake number 1. So I didn't really see any random bottle sharing going on that late in the day.

I happened to bring rubber rain boots, which worked great, except they gave me a huge blister from all the back and forth cattle line walking. I also had a rain coat over my regular coat. I was still soaked at the end of the night though.

I agree the guest tap list was not great, at least from what I saw. i did get DL twice from the FFF tent, but I did not see any must have guest taps, at least when I was over there.

DL and variant line went super quick, I got trump and pump and the wife got quit hitting yourself.

Got some food after we got our DL, line took maybe 20 minutes, which was not bad. Had a couple good beers in that line from some strangers.

Fast forward to about 8pm and I must have been getting drunk, although I didn't feel like it at first. Go to the pisser to take a pee and I bring my bag of DL with me. I was going to set it net to the shitter opening but "smartly" thought better of it, thinking it could fall in. So I balanced it on the little purse shelf thing that they have. Much better.....

Half way through my piss my bag of DL falls into the damn port o potty. So now I start freaking out and cussing extremely loudly as I am still finishing going pee, basically pissing on my own dark lord. Being drunk though, I did what had to be done, and I fished the bottle out of the port o potty. my variant didn't fall in, and the 4 pack holder kept the other bottles together, so it was rather painless getting them out, as painless as sticking your hand into a pile of shit can get anyway.

So now I have my shitty dark lord again. I ditch the tote bag, because it is 100% saturated in shit/urine. I hand sanitize the shit out of my hands the best I can and continue on my merry way. I wish that was the end of my problems.

Towards the end of the night, there are maybe like 50 people still at this damn thing, and I must have set down my sack of DL (literally a plastic grocery bag now) to get a guest tap. I walk down to the other side to see what else is on tap and the wife asks me where my DL bag is. It is no where to be found. I proceed to have a mental breakdown before we leave.

I hope the person that stole my DL doesn't read this post and drinks from the bottle, cus then he at least would be drinking dark lord that's barrel aged in shit.

 

BA Abraxas was on this year, but went super fast. As well as Prop 14, Parabajava, Rye BCBS. And a few more good things I heard, but it seems they tapped out very fast b/c I never saw any of these.

 

You win, man. If it makes you feel any better, your story is both terrible and partially hilarious.



Also--As someone who finds Dark Lord delicious but too sweet, I thought this year's was so sweet that I could barely finish half a bottle in one night. I haven't had a bottle since 2014, so I'm wondering if it's my palate. Any thoughts?

 

Anyone else here grab the Dwarven Power Bottom...or at least try it yet. The reviews out there are across the board and seem to be dated.

I thought it was one of the best I've had. A little roastier and more chocolatey. However, that was mid-fest, and haven't cracked a bottle sober yet.

 

I didn't open any bottles, but did have it on tap a couple times. Most definitely sweeter than years past for sure. Looking forward to letting them sit for awhile.

 

I really want to agree with this, but I know my palate was torched by the time I tried Dark Lord at the tent. I remember it being more roasty and chocolatey...but I was toast so I don't know if I can trust what I remember.

 

For all the discussion re: whether or not it's acceptable for a person to sell their BA DL...maybe the people who sold it just wanted to go DLD/get regular DL bottles but would have passed on any/all variants or particularly, whatever variants were available when they got through the bottle line. Why should anyone have to be subject to the forced purchase of a $50 beer they don't want, if they're able to pass that bottle on to someone who actually wants it?

I could easily understand, for numerous reasons I'd personally find acceptable, that many would want to dump that bottle.

Oh yea weather sucked, lines werent that bad, bottle share was awesome, Ive seen better guest taps.

 

I am definitely one of those that wanted to be there. Loved that everyone is guaranteed a variant. That being said, most things in this world have their price. For me, if someone is willing to basically cover all costs for my wife and I to go to this thing and I only need to give up one of our variants, that's worth it to me. For some people, covering almost 75% of the ticket fee might be worth it because they still have all of the regular bottles. Also, probably depends on the variant that they're giving up.

 

didn't grab it, had it on tap. it was sweet as you'd expect from a dessert wine barrel aged beer. I really liked it. it added oak to the usual DL flavor and that soy sauce-y note you get at the end was replaced entirely by a sweet yet soft wine taste

 

I had a fun time as well, the rain obviously sucked but my biggest issue is that I got too drunk to effectively manage the group D line. I had both mine and my buddies ticket on my neck and the guy handing out allotments refused to give me my bottles because he said I was trying to cheat the system and mule extra bottles. I found my buddy and tried to talk them into giving us both our bottles but they refused since the guy at the table had already ripped off my bottom tabs. They did give us both a variant though since the tickets hadn't been hole punched. Really no one to blame but myself though, the volunteer probably thought I was trying to pick up multiple allotments but it was an honest mistake.

As I stated above, I took away big thick gooey prune juice characteristics...again another one on draft mid fest with a lot of distracting factors, so weigh that with caution.

 

What happened to Permanent Funeral? It's been one of my favorites, and was looking forward to having some more on tap (like in previous years), but clearly it wasn't there - I didn't see it all day. Did Cuantro (the IIIPA) replace it or something?

 

Guy in our group got his DL and variant stolen at sounds like the same time and place. Pretty sure it was a girl and guy team. Didn't see them actually take it (obviously) but they were hanging around our group and eyeing the bags.
