That beer changed my view on IPA's.

 

Started to get a bit chilly outside, and I knew the corner store has some freshies of Flower Power. 4/22 bottling.

When the g/f's away the cats will play....and I can hear it now when she gets home, 'What, are you drunk?'..... 'yeah, a little bit.'

No work today, and a big hockey game is on tonight. Figured today was as good a day as any to crack this one open.

2011 Vintage

Posting my review since it's a 5 year old vintage, I already reviewed it (4 years ago), and I thus have no where else to share my review (and I'm a huge beer nerd that pretends other people actually care what I have to say even though I know they don't).

Surly Darkness (2011)
750mL bottle into a snifter
2011 vintage


A: Pours an opaue jet black with 1+ fingers width of light tan head that dissipates fairly quickly and leaves a few small patches of lacing. 4.5

S: Aroma is sweet and roasty; leather and tobaccoo. Very nice and fairly prominent dark fruits, subtle cocoa, cinnamon. Great nose. 4.5

T: Even more dark fruits than the aroma implied, with vanilla and roastiness on the finish. Quite sweet, but not cloying, a near perfect balance of sweet/roasty/leather. Great complexity for a non-BA, non-adjunct RIS. 4.75

M/D: Full bodied, very smooth, somewhat thick but not chewy, carbonation very low but appropriate, ABV is very well masked and drinkability is very good. 4.5

O: Love it fresh, love it with 5 years on it. Neck and neck with Zhukov as my favorite non-BA IS. 4.75
