By the way, one thing that was kind of disappointing about the Fermentaria was the tacos. I had heard good things about them and had never had them before last night. While the meat was good quality (and they give you plenty of it) I thought they were possibly the most bland tasting tacos I've ever had. Are they just a certain style that calls for no flavor? I also didn't like that they used the corn shells rather than the flour.

    A Pennsylvania Dutch taco!?!

    Cheers!

P.S. Maybe if they added some durian to them it would be better!?!

Street tacos basically. The flavor you are looking for generally comes from their guacamole (which is good) and a squirt of lime. Corn tortillas are the traditional vessel for the street tacos, and most legit Mexican places use those rather than the big, doughy flour ones.

I should also add that I effing love their carnitas tacos, but I hear that surprisingly (at least to me), their bean and cheese are where it's at.

Save your money and walk up the street to el Limon for their tacos. They're so good, at a fraction of the price.

Even though I struck out last night I was able to get my hands on a can of Alien Church thanks to a friend and had it tonight. I think I have to change my opinion of it. While I still don't think it's at the level of Weedeater, Imagination of Ourselves, High Road, Pigman, etc, it was clearly better than I remember it being when I had it the first time at the Fermentaria a few months ago. Actually had a bit of a Trillium mouth feel to it.

For the record I changed my Untappd rating from a 3 to a 4.

In all fairness, the stuff you're comparing AC to are different styles - being DIPAs/Triple IPA.

I feel like the el Limon in Conshy is way better than the one in Ardmore.

Anyone else notice that HopHands has been way off lately? Had it at the end of March, and thought it wasn't its usual self. Just got a growler today at the Fermenteria, and it's still way off IMO. A lot more bitter than it typically is, and kinda has that buttery taste.

I wonder if the buttery taste is a spring time thing. I noticed that in a few of the IPAs when they first opened.

Diacetyl is the source of that buttery taste. There are a number of ways that increased levels of diacetyl can occur in beer but an improper fermentation is the most probable reason.

    Cheers!

Diacetyl? It can happen when the yeast aren't done working. Is this why the beer is always so turbid looking? It's not completely done fermenting?

edit: Jack got in right before me

There are a number of theories on why "Northeast" style Pale Ales are murky. FWIW my personal theory is that it is a synergistic effect of brewing with British Ale yeast strains and very generous late hopping (including dry hopping).

    Cheers!

The irony of improper fermentation AT the Fermenteria!

HopHands is one of my favorite beers. The last couple of times I've had it on tap here in DC I definitely got that strong butter/diacetyl note. Disappointing.

Blue IPA? What nonsense is next? Having someone from the future deliver the beer? Wait...never mind. The tacos are average at best. The fish tacos were horrible and I am not sure the fish was not spoiled. You could smell them coming.

But the place prints money so more power to them.

FWIW that beer looks more gray than blue to me but maybe that is a function of lighting conditions? Maybe in bright sunlight it would look blue?

    Cheers!
