I'd agree. Have been there 5-6 times with various people over the past year. The location is nice and it's hours are good, but the beer still does nothing for me.

I have been to their taproom three times, and find the beer a step above homebrew. Their sour brown tastes like they just added lactic acid to a brown.... Great taproom, not big on their beer, though.

Are you trying to say all homebrew is poor quality?

Nope. Didn't imply that at all.

So, then what were you saying if not implying that all homebrew is bad so that their beer is merely a step above bad? Your reference point doesn't make sense without that implication considering you said you aren't big on their beer. Or, you were being sarcastic in your response to me which is possible.

In general, most homebrew is just ok. Their beer is a step above - just ok. Is that better?

Was I also implying that I have been to their taproom only three times. I have actually been there four times and didn't drink one time. Sorry I was implying I was only there three times...

I just want to say, every night I read that we are listed under the excellent category, then sigh deeply and clutch my phone to my chest, like a teenage girl holding a picture of Joey Lawrence. Is that weird? And are my references still relevant?

Ok..I pulled out my reviews I typed up on my phone on LynLake..I put a rough grade by my notes based on the grading system here but I did not do all the categories...just what I figured it would finish as. The eight beers I had averaged out to an average 3.8 rating. I think that's about where the places in the Very Good Category would rank. Maybe you could argue I should drop them a few notches but based on my reviews I have them pretty close to where they belong...very good...not excellent...not best of the best...I think they're better than those I listed in the good category at this point in time.

Here are my notes. Sorry they are not more detailed...just typed in some quick thoughts at the time for memory sake..

    Vienna: Nice toasty malts...clean...solid...3.9

Pony Boy Golden Ale: Basic...some flavor...clean...good for what it is...3.8

    Rubbish Oat Amber:A bit smokey...ok..3.7

Sir Charles ESB: minty aroma, floral...definitely grassy...herbal...not to style but enjoyable...unique..3.6

Sideburns Oat Raisin Milk Stout: Pretty solid, lactose...dark fruitiness...4.0

Mosaic Queen: great aroma. One of the best smelling beers I've had....raw catty flavor...flavor not as good as aroma but still very good...4.5

Take 6 IPA: Nice solid basic IPA with decent basic IPA flavors....tropical/citrus....a nice oiliness...maybe a tich thin...4.0

Moscitra double IPA: Starts sweeter but nice bitterness on the finish..a bit boozy...very boozy...worst of the bunch...aroma ok...average for style...2.9

Best of the best or bust. I think what you need is a training montage to get you to the next tier.

I can only hope barrel aged ass/toy gets us there this July. I'll have Isaac (the fax man himself) video him taking it out of the bunghole.

Glad to see you ranked Junkyard so high. I've only had the pleasure of drinking a few of their beers, but they were great.

I stopped by LynLake this afternoon to retry them, and found mixed results. The Bohemian Pilsener I had was quite good (recommendable, in fact), and the barrel aged wee heavy was also nice. The red IPA, however, was a developing diacytel bomb. I'll still try them again down the road, but I'd still say they're average at best. Average only in that serving flawed beer seems to be the norm with newer Minnesota breweries.

Thanks for retrying. Yes I agree...if they are serving an off diactyel bomb they should be in the average category. Maybe they just had some good batches going when I was there..

Made it into Nutmeg last night, they are right down the street from me and this is the first time I gave it a shot due to all the bad things I have heard.
Wish I would have seen that they were not serving any of their own beers right now. But with what I have heard maybe lucked out there anyways.
The wife and I sat at the bar and the service is as bad as what I have heard about the beers they were serving.
Food was decent an the Windvane was good.
When we asked about Nutmeg beers all the bartender said was "they are brewing them today, we will have them soon".
For being open for about a year the place looks like they never finished it either, pretty half ass outside with an unfinished wall and behind the bar looks like they dont know what else to put back there.
If you dont have your own beers, then why not fill the tap lines with more guest beers and put something in your coolers. Get your staff to apoligize for the lack of your beers or put up an explanation.
My guess is this place wont be called Nutmeg for much longer.

They are looking for an actual head brewer, which is why I'm guessing they haven't been serving their own beers. Maybe they have mad a hire and those beers are the ones they said they were brewing. By the sound of it, it's better they are not serving their own beers from the original brew person that was there.

By the taste of them, it's definitely better they're not serving their own beers. I hope they right the ship.
