I really like the Saison, Tropic King and Nelson Sauvin... and yes I should really buy them more.

I sent Nelson Sauvin to everyone in the last 6 or so boxes that I shipped out.

It was Deceit, but I found out recently from a Funkwerk's rep that they are no longer selling it anymore :slight_frown:. In that case I'll have to go with Tropic King.

    Really?! That really, really sucks.

Their flagship Saison remains my favorite. But Deceit was barely trailing behind. Those 2 beers are fantastic.

On a related note, I just read they released an Amarillo hopped Imperial Saison. Going to be back up in Denver later this week and while I really don't want to make the trek up to Fort Collins (only because I will be driving to and from Denver from Albuquerque), I just might have to in order to grab a bottle or two of that one.

And while I really enjoy their Nelson Sauvin, I would love it if they would exclude the grape muste from it.

Deceit was my favorite too. Sad to hear that it has been dropped. I thought it was one of the better true Belgian imitations around.

Funkwerks has an opening for a Fall seasonal and I wouldn't be surprised to see them fill it with Deceit. Also, from their website, they are going to do a BA Deceit in a 750ml. I don't remember seeing BA Deceit before this year, but I could be wrong? It says on their website, BA Deceit is aged between 18 months and 2 years in oak barrels.

BA Deceit is available at the tap room. At least it was a month ago

They did a Rum Barrel Aged Deceit (tap only) a few years back that was incredible....and I don't like rum.

They've released it every year (I think?). The past two years have been blends of rum and chardonnay barrels. They've done just rum before like denver10 said, as well as cognac.

And like DBD said, it is currently in the taproom. And it is delicious.

I guess I should of been more specific, I was referring to Funkwerks bottling the BA Deceit in 750ml bottles. I was/am thinking this is the first time for them to do that? As before, I could be incorrect?

Deceit is/was my favorite as well. It's as good as anything I've had from across the Atlantic. Fresher, too.
They had a Biere De Garde back when they first opened that was pretty killer. I can't recall the name, but it's what has made FW a permanent stop when I'm up that way.
The original BA Solstice and Dark Prophet are great. I think I'm still sitting on an old Dark Prophet bottle I should probably open.

Fruit-wise, I love all of those provincial releases. All of the places near me (Peak to Peak, Royal Hilltop, OC, etc.) all have at least one all of the time. They're good food beers.

Yep, I meant that they have bottled it every year as well, AFAIK. Sorry to be unclear.

And keeping with the theme of the thread: Amarillo Saison is available now. Dry-hopped Provincial might be as well; haven't been to the taproom in a bit.

Funkwerks just never did it for me, it seemed like the taste was always just meh. Nothing too exciting about it for me personally. And like many others have said, there are so many other great options in the area, and of course, Casey. Blame him.

Funkwerks definitely has buzz, are they a super hyped brewery, no, but whenever I have anything from them outside of their distribution or give one as an extra in a trade people seem excited about it.

Is Funkwerks hyped? No, because their beers are affordable and easy to obtain.
Is Funkwerks fantastic? Yes, because their beers are affordable, awesome and easy to obtain.

If they only sold beer once a month at their brewery, their would be hype too...

Ok this has been a very informative thread for me. As an outsider who occasionally gets to peer inside I appreciate this. I will still try to acquire FW when I can which won't be often enough (coming from near Sacramento). Out of further curiosity another Colorado brewery caught my fleeting attention which is further under the radar and is local - Copper Kettle. Wonderful flavored imperial stouts. Strangely when I last was there the tender requested I not fill any of my growlers with their beer and take them back to California because as he said it wouldn't be the most perfect way to present their beers. He literally talked me out of buying their beer and bringing it to somewhere noone had had it before. What are the thoughts on Copper Kettle?

I like Copper Kettle quite a bit. Like you say, their stouts (Snowed In and Mexican Chocolate) are great, and their other beers that I have tried are above average.

Re growler fills and traveling, I have heard of a few breweries taking this angle. I suppose the theory is that the breweries don't want you or your California friends to get a negative impression of the beer because it has aged poorly in a few days in a growler. I don't know if that is best way to market, but Copper Kettle is not the only one that I have heard of doing this.

For me, Copper Kettle's beers are either really good or "meh." When they're tasting good, they're pretty fantastic. That can go for the MCS, helles, or whatever. Other times, it feels like they're pushing things out the door based upon a schedule and not necessarily when they're ready. One of their own bartenders (who is now gone) even told me that their helles wasn't exactly up to snuff, but it was available anyway. That's never a great sign.
That was also right around the time they started going overboard with the gimmicky items, too.
They're VERY cool people and their successes are as good as anyone else's.
One thing that has impacted me going there is competition. Comrade's just down the way and they refuse to make a bad beer. The other direction is the Bull & Bush, which has their own great line-up and 40-taps of legit world class beers, too. That doesn't leave a lot of reason for me to hit up CK.
