I didn't look to closely but I swear I saw an modifier or rider to the amendment that would've banned delivery of beer/wine/booze to retailers on Sundays but still allowed the sales if it passed. I'm assuming that was to appease the Teamster opposition of last year's nonsense?

Most likely you are onto something here. Fortunately there is a good group of legislators striving to make this work and taking away all the excuses against it.

The not making more money with seven days argument has been blown to pieces by Washington after they legalized Sunday sales.

    https://www.minnpost.com/politics-p...ar-arguments-against-sunday-liquor-sales-bunk

It will happen within 10 years...I just want it to happen sooner...it could...people got to make this an issue...and not just people like us..

And trust me there is never a Sunday I don't have plenty of beer in the fridge of several varieties for whatever occasion it is so this is not something that impacts me much at all really...but in essence these legislators are encouraging the hard core drunks to drink and drive because their only options are to not drink (very low odds of that) or to go get drunk at the local bar....rather than bring their 1 3/4 liter of Vodka back to their place to drink in peace and not hurt other people..

These are the kinds of issues that need to be brought forward..

You mean to say that people will go buy beer before football games on Sundays if given the opportunity? Color me shocked.

My cousin works at a liquor store in Seattle and says they have to have double the staff on Sunday mornings before Seahawks games. Of course once the game kicks off they don't sell another thing until halftime, lol. Stores could even be open 8-noon and they would make a pile of money. It doesn't really take a long term study to figure this stuff out, IMO.

If anyone is going to make sure they have booze on Sunday, it's the hardcore alcoholics. They are the last ones to be caught with their pants down on this one.

Teamsters shouldn't have to work Sunday. No one should as far as I'm concerned.

The biggest obstacle to getting this done is the fact that it's "no big deal" to so many people, even those who are in favor. And it's true; compared to budget, and making sure people can go to the bathroom, and whatever else they do over there, it's a minor issue. But our legislators often vote whichever way the wind blows, and the Sunday Sales opposition blows hard.
    Advocates, relatively speaking, suck.
So next time it comes up, make sure you contact your representatives, and make sure your friends do, too.

I'm in this boat too and if I bought beer on a Sunday it would just take away from a purchase on another day of the week. I know I'm in the very small minority here on BA in that if the bills passes great and if not, I really don't care much.

X3 - I have more beer in my fridge than I know what to do with. BUT - Having just returned from Central WI yesterday (Sunday), I was happy to drop more than $100 at two different places along my way home, stocking up on brews I can't get here in MN. I imagine the many folks to visit MN on any given weekend would employ that same strategy on their way out of state, only to be shut out.

That said, I can almost guarantee this: we will have Sunday Sales by the time the Super Bowl comes to town...

No, neither "party" is to blame. This is not a partisan issue. There may be some partisan side issues (e.g. Teamsters), but as I look at who is for and who is against, it seems to be a district constituent issue mostly.

Anyone else catch the Twitter battle between Blue Max and Sunday sales supporters? Not much insight to really glean I guess except for Blue Max opposes Sunday sales because they don't want to work on Sundays. Which I guess is fair, I mean, if my boss wanted me to work on a Sunday I'd be pissed too. I guess my number one takeaway would be not to argue with your customer base on Twitter, regardless of the issue.

I wasn't going to post this because I didn't want poor Jim to get flamed any more. But yes, there are plenty of people who take this way too seriously. Not a good decision to address it in social media.

This law is a classic example of a law regulating business that gets passed for one reason, and then over the years businesses adapt their business model to the law. This, then, creates a reason (or reasons) to oppose any changes that have nothing whatsoever to do with the original rationale for the law in the first place.

I don't resent those small businesses that oppose this change based on their business profit and loss calculations. They are sincere in their belief that this change will only reduce their profits by increasing costs without a fully offsetting increase in sales.

Having that debate on social media is a mistake, however.

(BTW, I am less charitable toward the munis that also oppose it, since I am in general less charitable toward the idea of munis in the first place.)

These places that oppose it need to do proper research of states that have changed the law and increased sales...it's kind of common sense anyhow but now there is data there to support it..I'm not saying everything liquor store in the state would benefit but many would.

I don't have raw numbers but anecdotally it seems to be a generational thing. Most younger (non-boomer) legislators seem to be in favor of Sunday Sales while the old guard continues to be stubborn and fight it.

I don't care if you're Democrat, Republican or independent this law is ridiculous to the point of being silly. State government has NO BUSINESS mandating a day off for one particular industry because they have a powerful lobby group.

16 states have overturned Sunday Sales bans in recent years making it legal in 38 out of 50 states.
