I think this is a pretty cool idea. Great way to use up leftover resources, help the environment, and reduce me struggling with those horrible plastic rings. :grinning:

Pretty cool, plus if you run out of snacks on the boat...

Great idea! Any idea how much these add to the cost of a Saltwater six-pack right now?
Edit: I'd gladly pay the difference. I hate those damn plastic rings anyway.

Can they make these in nacho cheese flavor? Seriously though glad to hear breweries trying to save the planet!

Definitely a great idea! Ditto paying the extra to cover the additional cost to produce these vs the plastic ones.

The girlfriend is big on making sure the rings are cut so sea life doesn't get strangled or something to that effect. I remember to do this approximately zero percent of the time, causing her to yell at me. The turtles won't choke and she won't get shrill and call me stupid. Everyone's happy.

^ Even if you do cut them, the marine life can still eat the plastic pieces if it doesn't degrade fast enough, which is horrible for them (as you can imagine). This way they can eat it if they find it before it degrades and be fine since it's all natural.
No idea how much a 6 pack made of these would cost, but I read somewhere production of the edible rings is somewhere between 10 - 15 cents, so I imagine it wouldn't raise the cost too high. And I can imagine a lot of environmentally conscious breweries being interested in these, so if they take off, they would cost even less.

If that's the case, then there's no downside to this at all.

There's certainly no downside to this. I have no desire to harm wildlife and if something as simple as this can help I'm all for it. I have always wondered though, how would a plastic ring that either goes to a landfill or recycling center in southern Wisconsin possibly end up in the ocean for a sea turtle to eat it in the first place?

I like this, a lot. The green halo around this could arguably make up for the increased cost, especially for brands that emphasize their green credentials. The key question is if it will be as functional as normal holders.

I think it's a positive step not only for our oceans but all freshwater lakes and rivers. This problem affects many of our precious Midwestern species in unnecessary and saddening ways. That being said, the Mute swan is an invasive species in our parts and I will smack their fucking heads with a golf club. Asian carp are also on my shitlist

Yeah, invasive species are as big a threat as anything to the environment and the problem doesn't get the attention it should. I've talked to people who know about this stuff and they say the Asian carp eventually will get to the great Lakes and basically fuck up the entire ecosystem for good. All because of some asshole fish farm in Arkansas who's ponds overflowed. It's nuts.

Anything is better than those Pak-Tech holders. You have to be freakin' Hercules to get a beer out, shaking the hell out of the beer in the process. They look cool, but meh.

So yeah, bring on the edible holders!

FWIW, those clear plastic 6pk rings are designed to become brittle with UV exposure.

If its only an extra 15 cents I'd like to see everyone do it. I was thinking the only downfall would be if it was an extra buck or two, but if it's that cheap it should be a no brainer.

I love the idea of these, but afraid .15/ea could keep some breweries from using them. It doesn't sound like much, but as an example, if a brewery has a run of 200 cases a week of cans, at .15/ea that comes out to and extra $120 per run. It's easy to say just add the price onto the product, but many brewery threads already have people bitching about the price of a 4 pack or a 6 pack of cans.
I'd say if they can get the price down to within a couple of pennies of the plastic it is a no-brainer.
Hopefully they can get enough interest to produce larger quantities at a lower cost.
