I will be heading to Detroit from June 21-24 and am looking for some advise on local beers/breweries that I should try and seek out. I am coming from Jersey and won't have much spare time to travel around. We get Founders here so unless there is some secret place that has CBS, I'm not too interested in them. I'd love to find a good place for bottles that I can bring/ship home.

Hate to give the default first reply, but Detroit's a big area. Any idea where you'll be exactly?

8 Degrees Plato on Cass and Peterboro is awesome and I believe the only true bottle shop in downtown Detroit. You also got Batch Brewing on Porter St., which will have to-go bottles and Jolly Pumpkin on Canfield also with bottles for sale.

EDIT: Forgot about Atwater on Jo. Campau, neat place and they have bottles for sale; beer is meh imo though. And the RenCen has a newly opened Granite City...good food, below average beer.

8 degrees for bottles. If you get a chance to make the 10 min drive over to Corktown then St. Ce Ce's (bar), Batch (brewery), Mudgie's (sandwich joint w decent beer) and Brew Detroit (brewery) are all virtually in walking distance of one another.

Definitely check out Hopcat. Great bar with a huge selection. It's not the closest to the Marriot, but it's not exactly far either.

All of the recommendations are very good, but if you can get out and about, Kuhnhenn Brewing is the highest-hyped brewery in the Detroit area and is worth the visit. No bottles though. It's about 15 miles north of downtown.

There are several bars with good beer lists within walking distance from your hotel: Jacobys, Checker Bar, and the Grand Trunk. Stay the hell away from the Granite City "brewery" in the Ren Cen. As mentioned above, 8 degrees is probably the only real bottle shop in Detroit.

We went to Batch last month and it was God awful. Don't waste your time.

Hopcat has a ton of stuff on tap. Lots of bottles, it would be my first choice for best variety from the Midwest and beyond. The crack fries are fantastic!
