I've said it before, but shops should develop a rewards program. People who buy the most from that store should get the first crack at a limited release. Would cut down on the folks that never go to a store other than the one or two times a year just to hunt down a limited release beer.

I mean, a lot of places already do informal versions of this. I've definitely been offered bottles that weren't on the shelves at places I frequent.

And then people complain that shops play favorites and don't give everyone equal opportunity to buy stuff. Can't please everyone; lots of good beer out there.

This is certainly strange, and something I've never seen before.

But frankly, I don't have a ton of warm and fuzzy feelings about the guys who drive around to every shop buying up all the limited releases. So at least HT is trying to spread the wealth, even if there may be better ways of doing so.

My bad, didn't read to the end. Always used to seeing corporations doing what's best for maximum profit. Good on HT for taking notice on what's happening on the second market.

See if you do it above board then everyone knows the rules going in. And the owner/mgr can say yeah we do play favorites, buy more beer from us and we can hook you up as well.
And I've had it happen to me as well at Dominion. They will hold something for me, not the super rare stuff, but something that is somewhat limited. I've also gotten some sample beers from them. Just really good guys in there and they treat their regulars great as well as people that are there for the first time.

So my bro lives in Baltimore so I will speak for him since he is asking me about it.

KBS, where is some still around?
Grimm Double Negative, any still around?
Double Duckpin, he hasn't seen any around and always thought you had to go to the brewery.

    Thanks!

The guys at Dominion are great. Not stingy whatsoever regarding samples from the taps. I buy 95% of my beer there because they have the best prices, reward loyal customers, and are genuinely good people. I look at them as a model on how to run a bottle shop. It's actually where I was able to try Crucial Taunt. They had a can and I was the only one in the shop. They cracked it open and let me try some. Jah bless Dominion.

Went to Dominion for the first time last week. Guys who worked there were great-courteous, knowledgeable, and hooked me up with an additional bottle of nice beer. Definitely will be making the drive back there soon.

Hands down my favorite place. Every time I go in, they have multiple interesting beers. Great staff, good pricing. I go out of my way to hit Dominion whenever I can!

I live 1/2 mile away from Dominion and I can't wait until they open the bar upstairs! My quick beer run is going to go from a 15 minute trip to a 2 hour trip.

When I first heard about truck chasers, I thought 'how do they have the time to do that? don't they have a job.' Then I realized 'that is their job.' Their income is the markup. So they are like ticket scalpers for concerts or sports events. Like a ticket for a popular concert, certain limited release beers are being retailed for less than their real market value. So just Adam Smith's invisible hand stepping in. And selling beer in the secondary market for cash is even more risky, because it is illegal.

if that's your job, every limited release you miss, is money you leave on the table. and the more they stockpile, the higher they can mark them up because the fewer the bottles left out in the wild.

I doubt there are people who literally truck-chase for a living, I don't think secondary markup is that high on distributed beers. I think its just people who don't have jobs (there are plenty of people born with money who don't have to work), work nights (just about everyone in the service industry), and people with flexible hours. I can't spend all day chasing trucks, but I can get up and go to the store pretty much whenever I want, unless I'm in a meeting or something.

I also wouldn't be surprised if some people use much of their vacation time for truck chasing certain releases (BCBS and KBS come to mind).
