Thanks guys, this is very helpful.

While it appears I can "survive" the beer scene in Morgantown, I was curious as to what other options there are in the area. I don't mind making an hour drive up to Pittsburgh from time to time, but I was wondering if there's anything of interest that's nearby over in Ohio as well. Likewise, anything in between Morgantown and Pittsburgh in PA. that is worth a visit?

Good luck John, not a whole lot in that area, not unless you want to drive to the Burgh. Morgantown Brewing and Mountain State are your best options. Nothing mind blowing, but good, solid beers.. Dave (dmamiano), what was the place we went to that was closed that day, you said they have a good bottle and tap list? Black Bear isn't bad either.

Thanks man.... I'm not expecting DC, Baltimore, Philly or Portland, but your post about Morgantown brewing sounds promising. Also, I'm accustomed to driving up to Harrisburg or Philly to find good beer, so I don't think it will be too arduous a task to drive up to Pittsburgh from time to time. That being said, it would be nice to find something decent locally as well...

I was just at Mountain State on Friday night. The flat breads were very good, but the beer was just average. My son is a freshman at WVU so I will be there visiting fairly often. Really wish the options were better. Oh...you can check out Boston ******y, also.

If you don't mind a 2-hour drive, House of Wines in Marietta OH (in Devola actually) is a good shop. You'll find Three Floyds there.

Thanks! I actually make that kind of drive roughly once a month now (we don't get RR, Ballast Point, Ithica, Alesmith, etc., in Baltimore), so I don't see any reason I couldn't make the drive out to Mareitta from time to time as well.

Obviously, it would be great if there was a store of that caliber in Morgantown, but you do what you have to do (when it comes to obtaining good beer). Thanks for the tip!

I don't suppose there's a skyline chili parlor anywhere around there as well.

Can anybody back me up on that about Three Floyds in Marietta? That was 2nd hand to me. Started thinking about it and I may have confused it with Hoppin' Frog (another we do not get in WV). I would hate to mislead a man on a 2-hour drive...

    anybody?

:-) I appreciate your concern, but the latest BA review would appear to confirm your report. Probably won't make the drive out there till some time in November or December, but I'm already dreaming of (hopefully) grabbing a case of Zombie Dust there.

Ah! Should have read my own link!
Additionally, there are a couple places in Washington PA that are worth going to if you're as close as Mo'town. It may keep you from going to Pitt more than you need to.

I hope that's true (regarding Washington). Washington Pa. is actually a town I did a Beerfly search for and, well, I can't say I was overly impressed by what I saw. I'll try to keep an open mind, but the reviews I read didn't sound all that promising. I was initially quite excited when I saw Washington House and Tria under the Washington listing, but then noticed that neither place is actually in Washington, Pa.

Given that Washington doesn't appear to save me a whole lot of driving time, I suspect I'll just make the extra drive up north, where I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time wandering around East Carson Street.

Keep in mind that I am currently in one of few remaining true beer Hells: WV. Although it's getting better, I am aware of things near us that we haven't a hope in hell of ever getting. Fair warning, Washington probably won't rock your world.

Tell 'em I said hey at Pipers Pub (local and cask). They'll likely have any soccer match you were interested in watching on a Saturday and Sunday morning.

Not to be a buzzkill, but we only get FFF bombers in OH.

Ah well, thanks for the warning.

I'm really trying to keep an open mind and not prematurely judge the beer scene in WV, but yeah, I kind of figure it's going to be something of an adjustment moving to/living in Morgantown, after coming from Portland (Oregon) and the Baltimore/DC/Philly area. I'm counting on Morgantown's proximity to Pittsburgh to help somewhat, and I appreciate the post about Marietta as well, but I'm not wildly optimistic about the beer scene in WV.

    John,
You're moving to Mo'Town? Hook up with the local homebrewers from Morgantown and Fairmont.. that will be your best bet. The guys from Fairmont are a bunch of really good guys, We hook up a couple times a year to brew and go on beer trips..Philly, Asheville, Hickory, NC for Hickory Hops festival.

Yup. It's a transfer/promotion, and the new job is fantastic... so I'm trying to make the best of what I suspect will be an unfortunate drop-off in the qualiity of my beer consumption.

    John,
I know you hooked me up with info when I hade my trip out to Portland a couple years back, and again when Ive made some trips to Baltimore. So being that your moving to the state I grew up in and plan on spending some time in my new home, let me no when you make it to the Southside. I will try and return the favor by being your personal Pittsburgh beer liaison. (I should try and make that a career). I will just reinforce what everyone else has said; your not as desolate as you once could of been. The brewpubs there are more than adequate. Bottleshops, now thats another story. As for grabing cases in Washington, thats where I used to go when I cut my teeth on craft beer about a decade ago. You might be able to find a few things there, but drive the extra half hour and just come to Pittsburgh. Cappelli's is whereI used to go, but like I said that was years ago. There is also a small bottleshop right up the road called Chicken Charlies. Its also a gas station so that will give you some idea as to what to expect. Back then I was just happy to buy single bottles of beer I couldnt get in WV, so again dont expect too much in Washington.

    Cheers,
    Sam

Lesser known and not as wide-ranging, Elkins also has an active brew club with about 15 good brewers--the Appalachian Brew Club. We never have gotten recognition from those that created the WV Craft Beer Appreciation Society, but we've been here all along.

Thanks Sam. I appreciate the offer (and will take you up on it when I finally get situated in Morgantown).

I actually did a beercation trip to Pittburgh in July 2011, and had a great time there. Pittsburgh actually looks to be a somewhat shorter drive from Morgantown than the drive I make on a fairly routine basis up to Al's of Hampden in the burbs of Harrisburg, so I'm not all that worried about making the trip up there. Also, even though I only visited a handful of places in Pittsburgh (Fat Heads, Church, Smokin Joe's, Sharp Edge, etc.), I was very impressed by the beer scene there and had a great time. Frankly, the area where I currently live out on the West side isn't such a great area for beer, as I typically have to drive a half hour or more to get to any place decent in Baltimore. So the way I see it, having to drive up to Pittsburgh every now and then shouldn't represent that great a change from my current routine. Also, I'm very optimistic that I can find something enjoyable over at the Morgantown Brewing, and am looking forward to stopping by there soon as I hit town in a couple weeks.

Moving from Baltimore to Morgantown, you'll love the price per pint John !
