The Veil Brewing - Richmond

They did so well on the 2pp 4pk limits last week I wonder why they upped it back to 3pp for a brand new never before released beer. At least they kept it pretty low but I see this as a record time for a sell out. Under 2 hours easy I bet. The per person per day line is not even needed at this point. Just say "per person period"

"~INFO FOR TODAY, TUESDAY MAY 31ST CAN RELEASE~

Today we canned two fresh batches of hoppy beer(finished less than an hour ago!). Beginning today at 4PM we will be selling the following in 16oz can 4-packs:

-Yung Blud(pronounced Young Blood)-our take on a Red IPA-6.3%. With this beer we were trying to execute the least malt forward Red IPA possible and we feel like we have achieved our goal. This is hopped intensely with Amarillo and Galaxy. Incredibly dank, pine, fresh grapefruit. We are pretty stoked on this and hope you are too. Approx. 100 cases packaged; $13.50+tax per 4-pack; 3x 4-packs per person.

-IdonteverwanttoBU-0 IBU Double IPA-9.3%. This is the imperial version of our 0 IBU IPA IdontwanttoBU. Hopped exclusively with Citra and Mosaic. 0 bitterness. This one is just insane. Drinks like it's 6 or 7%, but clocks in at 9.3%. Straight up hop juice. Approx. 65 cases packaged; $15+tax per 4-pack; 2x 4-packs per person.

Limits are per person, per day. Please do not try and get back into line to purchase another allocation. You will be denied.

We also had some complaints regarding people cutting or holding spots for friends in line. Please, if there is a line, be fair and get in the back like everyone else.

These cans are ONLY available from our tasting room and will not see distro to ensure the quality/freshness is carefully considered.

For draft we will have:
-Lord Shredder-6.1%-IPA with blood oranges
-Crucial Taunt-8%-our flagship Double IPA
-Cheryl from Accounting-6.4%-Sour IPA with mainly Citra hops
-Yung Blud-6.3%-our take on a Red IPA with Amarillo and Galaxy
-IdonteverwanttoBU-9.3%-0 IBU Double IPA with Citra and Mosaic"

 

Other than the fact that hops will sell out the night of sale, can anyone provide some insight on the releases so far?

Specifically, I'm leaving Philly for a trip to VA/NC on a Tuesday in July, and I'd like to hit the Veil release, assuming they continue to be on Tuesdays. Currently I'm scheduled to work a half day, which would mean leaving Philly around noon. If I got to Veil at 4-4:30 p.m., am I going to be looking at a ridiculous line and the risk of being shut out, or would that be sufficiently early based on people's experiences thus far? I could potentially take the morning off or adjust my hours, but I only want to do that if necessary.

I think the line and when it has sold out has sort of varied from week to week, with the constant that there has definitely been a good sized line by opening at 4 every week.
Last week my buddy went and the line was still wrapped around the building at 6. I assume its very likely some people may have been shut out of something (3 can release) however one of the three cans made it until the next day.

 

I think you'll probably be good getting there around 4-4:30. It seems like they usually sell out of at least one around 5:30-6, but by then there's not much of a line, and the people in line at the time probably just got there. They also announced today that they hired a second brewer to increase production, so there should be more cans overall in about 3-4 weeks.

 

I would agree with @beernuts . Getting to Veil by 4:30 should keep you pretty safe to get cans. I am surprised people still show up a little earlier and earlier each week and have not caught on that lines move very quick once they start taking orders and they have lasted last for a couple hours most weeks. Yung Blood from yesterday and then Master Shredder from a few weeks ago are the only two that have made it beyond release day up to this point. Just keep an eye for their update the a day or so before you head down to get an idea on what's coming and then the day of, just before opening, on exactly how many cases are available. Also, if you are bringing some good stuff down to share or even try to trade then you should not have a problem getting hold of cans in the case that you miss out I would expect.

 

Thanks, everyone. I'll monitor the situation moving forward. It sounds like I'll 100% be fine even if I just move my schedule up by an hour or so even, so I'm not too worried. Worst case I'll bring some Tired Hands to trade.

 

Anyone know what time they sold out of IdonteverwannaBU? It looks like it was after 7PM on the FB timestamp but it could have happened an hour or two earlier for all I know?

I'm planning a trip in a couple Tuesdays and I know the crowd will depend on what they release but the only thing that would bum me out more than standing in line for a long time would be getting shut out on one of them.

 

It sold out earlier than that, I think like 5:45 or so.

 

I want to say it sold out around 5 or 530. There were only 65 cases, and most people were maxing out (rightfully so, it's delicious). As has been previously mentioned, as long as you are there by 430 or so, you will be fine. And while they will be doing double batches more often of beers, some canned beers may still be single batches and therefore may still at times see low case yields.

 

Any thoughts on IdonteverwanttoBU? The single version of this might be my favorite from The Veil yet, and I'm seeing ridiculously high ratings for the double on Untappd (take that as seriously as you want to). Have a few of both recent releases in the fridge but have yet to open one.

Not sure what Veil is trading for outside the IPA front, but I put up a post in the ISO forum if any of you VA guys/gals are looking for some Burial Skillet Donut Stout. 5/30 batch.

 

I would see that closing pretty quick. I would go 1:1 if I had freshies. The completed trades has someone who did 18 Veil cans (mixed I assume) for 3 Cakes. A few too many Veil cans given up for that IMO.

 

I just had the Snozzwanger last night, a friend shared here in Florida. yet to try the IPAs, but it was a quite tasty sessionable stout.

 

Veil continues to raise the bar on the way they do releases each week. Hope all other breweries in the area (RVA and beyond) are taking notice. My personal opinion, since they will sell out regardless, is to limit Hornswoggler to 1 4pk/pp. Give the most people possible the chance to find the "golden coin"

Of course I'm a bit bummed because I'm guessing this means no Crucial Taunt when I can finally come up next week.

I beg to differ on that. Of course we won't know how many cases there are until tomorrow but they did do a 2pp 4pk last week (65 total cases) on IdonteverwanttoBU and it still sold out within 3 hours. Two weeks ago they had Crucial Taunt, Lord Shreddar and Cheryl From Accounting (250 total cases) with each set to 2 4pk/pp and there were barely 10 cases left going into the next day. I don't think any release they have done so far has made past closing of the following day. At 1pp per day it most definitely would sell out in well under a week. Worst case scenario it lasts til Fri/Sat but I still would not expect it to go that long even at 1pp.
