Just wanted to share an interesting little story of a trade between @mradamhimself and me.

We agreed on a trade, some Nor-Cal goods for some Chicago goods. We both shipped. His box coming to be almost immediately had an exception that the box was damaged in transit and UPS would be contacting the shipper. Then no further updates.

Both of us assumed the box was lost or going back to the shipper. Adam, being the most excellent beer trader he is, immediately sent off a replacement box, even before getting the original box back.

Fast forward to today. I get a random box on my doorstep, with a wet bottom. Its from Adam. WTF?

I open it, and it's obvious that UPS re-packed the box and sent it on it's way. Apparently, a 12oz can had leaked. UPS opend the box, un-wrapped everything, took the leaking can out, repackaged the rest of it (poorly), and shipped it. Because they put a can right aside of a bottle cap, a 2nd can leaked. I'm really surprised I got the box at all. My front porch smelled of beer.

Cheers to Adam for being a great trader. Cheers to UPS for not stealing the beer and trying their best to ship it? Boo to UPS for crappy packaging?

Unlike Fedex UPS is good about this kind of thing. I had a beer break in a box coming to me and they held it at the local warehouse for me to pick up and had the remaining beers rinsed off and in a new box waiting for me and apologized for the broken beer. I always use UPS for beer trading, Fedex is a nightmare if something breaks or they find out there's beer in the box.

As has been noted countless times, it appears to be strictly a function of who discovers the break. Hero = lost beer, normal person = beer passed along.

I've had a handful of boxes over the years (including one I sent myself from CA) come with a broken bottle "missing" & the entire box re-packaged by FedEx. My unscientific observation over the years is that you're just as likely to be screwed by UPS as by FedEx if something goes awry.

Yep, I have had FedEx repackage a shipment and send it back to me (with an apology) after they mishandled it severely.

Similar thing happened to my box when I shipped it out to you as well. Except that after they removed the broken bottle and they repackaged it, they sent it to back to me.

It is good to know UPS just wont toss the whole box out.

Makes me feel more comfortable with my decision to use UPS.

I've had boxes sent to me on two separate occasions where one bottle broke and fed ex re packed it and sent it to me

FedEx once delivered to me a soaking wet box that smelled like Sucaba in a plastic bag

UPS delivered a box to me yesterday that wasn't wet, but did smell like Sucaba. Three bottles leaked(Sucaba, Parabola, & BBAPt5th), and thankfully the secondary bag in the box contained it. My UPS guy didn't say a thing, even though the sweet boozey smell was very noticable.

Mailed a ton of beer from Vermont back to my house last year and stupidly did not wrap the cans as good as I did the bottles thinking they were secure and not a problem...when The UPS Driver delivered the boxes to my house on his dolly the box with cans had beer flowing out of one of the corners of the box like an open tap...he's been delivering to my house for 20 years so he just laughed about it...that and the fact I give him a 50 dollar Flemings Gift Card Every Christmas probably helped make light of the situation

I've had the Fed Ex situation where a box coming to me leaked and they made me go pick it up at the sorting facility. They had the remaining bottles re-wrapped in bubble wrap and in a new box. They scolded me for shipping beer but I just played dumb.

Also had a new trader ship to me using USPS and put a bunch of bottles in a flat rate box with just some newspaper for padding. 2 of them broke and USPS delivered the box anyway, soaking wet and stinking of sour beer after they wrapped it in saran wrap.
