I have done a few trades and was wondering what people thought was the best way to secure the bottle caps on there? I recede one trade with electric tape on them and thought it was a good idea. Went to go pick up some electrical tape and read a warning about it having chemicals in it that causes cancer to wash hands thoroughly... So I am wondering, is this the best idea out there or what would be the best thing to do?

I believe other people have used splicing tape.

I've sent thousands of packages, usually a case of 24 bottles each, with zero electric tape. I don't even use bubble wrap. I get maybe 2 boxes back a year with damage, and it certainly isn't from caps being loose. Myth busted.

If the cap wants to come off, tape ain't gonna hold the fucking thing on. It won't keep beer or co2 from escaping either. If the crown cap is leaking co2 or beer, the damage is done and tape wasn't going to prevent it. To me, this is like taping drywall to the studs even though it's got 12 screws in it already. If the wall wants to fall, it's the screws fault and the tape can't be held responsible. It's just tape.
No need to tape the bubble wrap either.. If it unravels because you don't tape it, one needs to re-evaluate the ol' packing technique. Tape belongs on the outside of the box.

We can use tape on the outside of the box? Not rubberbands?

I've never done any of this, as I don't think it's really necessary. However, while reading this thread I thought to myself if I was to do something like this I'd use heat-shrink tubing.

I just know Ive had 2 boxes now that had bottle caps come off. One was a twist off and the other it was Co2 issues with the brewery, It happened to a few other people who just had it cellared, and happened to me while purchasing a bottle at the store.

Try my idea then. I'm about 97% sure that if you use heat-shrink that cap isn't going anywhere. To anyone who's never used heat-shrink tubing, it really doesn't take much heat to make it shrink. It's certainly not enough to effect your bottle.

I usually just drink it before I send it, no leaks....the value is in the empty container anyway.

I use the rubberized splicing tape. It's not going to harm anyone. Typically, I only worry about brews that are bottle conditioned....such as Jester King brews. I always pack those so they are upright too.

Why not something as simple as dipping in wax?

I usually use tape. It may not help all that much, but it certainly cant hurt. If it makes me feel better about my bottles getting to their destination safely, then it did its job for me.

Define "hurt". It's annoying to get off and leaves behind residue that could contaminate the beer.

I usually use electrical tape on the caps. It creates less of a lip where the edge of the cap could accidentally get hit and pop off. At least that's what I tell myself. It probably doesn't do jack, but its cheap and takes 5 seconds.
