I am sorry, not grand soliloquy about this beer, just a damn tasty beer. Silky smooth with great aroma and flavor, easily my favorite 18th St offering.[IMG]

It's definitely not the boldest stout but it's an awesome winter session beer.

Good afternoon, all, and Happy New American IPA Sunday! This is Devil Anse, from Greenbrier Valley Brewing in Morgantown, West (by G-d!) Virginia. The name is a reference to Devil Anse Hatfield, of THE Hatfields of mountain lore. Beautiful pour, set against this backdrop of coastal palmettos:

The aroma of this was rich with pine and citrus, backed by a touch of light malt. It was so bright that it nearly jumped out of the glass. The flavor was delightful as well: piney, cutrusy, resiny, and a little grassy, with an incredibly dry and bitter finish. The odd thing is that this was not particularly fresh, having been canned in January 2016. The malt bill includes American 2-Row, American Pilsner, and British Crystal. Citra, Simcoe, and Galaxy hops round out the profile. Am I too easily impressed? Undeniably. But this one is fantastic, and I'm at an unapologetic 4.75/5.

    Bottoms up, y'all!

Good afternoon to all the NBS followers and thanks to @JackHorzempa for the great start today. After being away visiting my daughter near Pittsburg, PA last weekend it's good to back at home today or at least for part of it as we were up early and off to King Arthur Flour for a baking class early this morning. We learned how to make Crusty Rolls and also Parker House Rolls. My baking skills have always lagged a little behind my other cooking skills so the outcome of todays class was very pleasant.

Now on to my new beer for this Sunday and not a new beer to a lot but one I finally found locally this week is Founders Sumatra Mountain Brown.
This beer poured a dark brown mostly opaque color into my snifter glass. A very thin head dissipated quickly from the top.
The nose is mostly of the rich Sumatra coffee used in this brew. There is a sweetness that lingers in the nose after the coffee aroma passes.
The taste is of rich coffee flavor well done with the sometimes bitter after tatse of some coffees. The is a sweetness I am assuming from the dark malts that seems to mellow the coffee as I let this warm a little in my glass.
The mouth feel is smooth but with this great coffee taste it is hard for it to be anything else.
This is a well done beer that I expect from Founders. Great coffee flavor and a smooth brown ale.
As it is now raining quite hard here perhaps I can find another beer to share later on this afternoon.

Hello NBSers and Cheers from rainy Connecticut. I was saving this beer for Sunday to join NBS thinking it would be the perfect afternoon beer for a sunny summer day. I guess I should have checked the weather. However, I still have this Night Shift Brewing/Whirlpool APA.
I like a good APA. Especially in the summer. I find them the perfect balance between malt and hops, drinkability and fullness.
Upon opening the can I was hit with a full but delicate waft of Mosaic hops.
Grassy, fresh grapefruit, and citrus rind. And with pouring the beer I realized this was the first time I ever though, "wow...the color follows the smell".
The beer pours a beautiful, hazy straw blonde. Not unlike grapefruit juice. This is a pale ale, indeed. A nice foamy white head sits a top the light body.
The taste is of crisp cracker malts barely backing up the hops. I am getting a slight peachiness along with the citrus rind and grapefruit. As it warmed more of the peach comes out, along with a grassy, earthiness.
The mouth feel is light and balanced with a little pinch of spice on the finish.
I really wish this beer was available to me in Connecticut. It is a wonderfully flavorful beer, light and delicate, perfect for summer. Certainly a better choice than any session beer.

Cheers, all. And thanks again to @tasterschoice62 for this beer even if it isn't fresh anymore.

Happy New Belgian Dark Ale Sunday!

Pretty nice weather we are having on the Western Slopes the last 2 weeks, and looks to be continuing for a few more days. Today pretty nice, sunny, low 80's, did a nice little hike today. My first from this brewery, pretty tasty, for what it is.

I'm back for another that I couldn't find around here, so I picked up a six pack in Michigan yesterday to see what's up? Let's pop the crown on this twelve ounce bottle of Founders Palm Reader dated 04/12/16 and pour it in my Founders tulip for the occasion.

Pours a slightly hazy and radiant yellow leaving two fingers of frothy egg white foam. A nice looking beer! The smell is a pretty tame mix of malt, yeast and floral hops. Flavor is perfume/floral hops up front followed by grapefruit, malt, and some straw/grass in the finish. The feel is crisp, clean and very dry.

Well? A solid enough beer from Founders using Michigan hops that has a very unique floral taste. The smell is quite weak and the only major detractor. A well made pale that hits the spot on a sunny and warm day after mowing the lawn. My score was 3.85 / rDev +2.1%.

Off down the road to share a couple with my bro, then back home to fire up the grill and possibly one more review. Enjoy the rest of your day, here's my 'official' two cents......

Hello all! I'm doing surprisingly well for the day after Duvel Day #666. I actually stuck with lower gravity beers as the evening went on (notably a few of those Little Bretts mentioned earlier in the thread), so there's definitely no regrets on my end .

Today's the day where I turn 52, and #1 Son turns 19, so it's been kinda nice puttering around all of this rainy day, but mostly relaxing. My first beer comes during a break in the clouds, which is nice because it allows me to frame it in the herb garden-
    [IMG]
Dogfish Head's Biere de Provence, brewed with the herb mixture that shares the name.

Right off the bat, this is quite a different beast than the saisons and farmhouse ales I've been drinking lately. In other words, it's big, bold and powerful. The nose is dominated by the malts and yeast signature ( sauternes-like grapiness, dried apricot, clove-like spices, nilla wafers), but floral and herbal elements add complexity underneath. The flavor is also huge, fruity, spicy and malty, but the herbs stand their ground a lot better here. The finish is pleasingly dry- a really nice accomplishment, considering how sweet-ish and concentrated the flavors are, and I'm left with a long lingering delicate herbal finish (which is the only delicate thing about this beer). Overall, it's a pretty nice effort that avoids the potential 'cloying' landmine that it seemed to be heading for. You do have to be in the mood for a strongly flavored beer, however. (B+, 3.85)

I knew I was taking a gamble on sending that as the style can be quite polarizing. Hell, I'm just starting to cut my teeth with the style myself. I appreciate your honesty and know better now what to send your way in the future.:wink:Cheers Brian!

Greetings NBS! Been a few weeks since I posted, so figured I'd come back to you guys today with a Rogue Farms ale I haven't yet had, somehow. Contrary to lots of BA members, I've actually been a pretty consistent fan of the Rogue Farms stuff I've had and like the concept of sustainable farm-brewing on a fairly sizeable scale. I will say that I do find it disappointing that they don't bottle-date their beers, but I figured this should be a safe bet regardless of its age.

My housemate happens to have a Rogue pint glass, so I figured that would be appropriate glassware to pour this one into. Comes out a filtered, clean looking deep-ish amber color with very retentive off-white head. Leaves a bit of sticky lace after each small pour. Carbonation is rather lazy and slowly-rising, so I assume this will be a beer that will let its smokiness and spice show decently.

Nose is, obviously, full of peppery spice, though there's also some appreciable caramel maltiness, herbal and earthy hops and some elements that remind me of Belgian yeast funkiness. I'm sure this is a clean beer (it uses the normal Rogue house Pacman yeast, after all), but perhaps something with the smoked peppers and the base beer has come together to remind me of a slightly rustic Belgian brown/amber ale. Interesting.

Flavor is very smoky, almost rauchbier-like (reminds me a little of the first time I had Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen, actually), though with an obvious heat towards the finish. It's not that sharp or piquant, though the capsaicin elements linger on the palate a bit, causing a slight tingle. It's almost like each sip reminds the palate of the past couple sips. The base beer is clearly a solid amber ale, though it definitely seems like it would be very plain without the chipotle inclusion. Slightly roasty with some chicory notes along with woody sap from the way the hops work with the peppers.

Feel is round, decently-carbonated and medium bodied (leaning a little on the heavy side without being too much). Slightly syrupy as well. At only 5.4% ABV, this is actually pretty drinkable and worthy of a session if you like even mildly-peppery beers. I can definitely see this being pushed into crazier territory, given Rogue's proclivity towards the in(s)ane here and there, but for what it is... this continues the Rogue Farms' label's solid-quality approach in my eyes. Not a bad drink at all!

Listening to some Ukrainian black metal on vinyl. Haven't thrown this on for a while. Leans a bit on the "symphonic" side of things, with theatrical keyboards and sweeping arrangements. A bit raw, but I dig that for the most part. Limited to 400 copies and I'm happy to have one. The proceedings here are kept short and sweet overall, as well, at only 30 minutes total. I guess this is considered a demo which was repressed on wax though, so that makes sense. Solid stuff, just like the beer!

Dark copper and clear with a decent lacing beige foam head. Nose is big fight with a finishing aroma that smells like, well, fart.

Taste, luckily, is not fartish. It has a strong fig, little bit of pine in the bitter, and a finish with a strong alcohol thing.

    Finished dry, not much aftertaste.

To paraphrase David Gilmour's lyrics from the Floyd song "The Movie", it's not the worst, not the best.
