Did they have a poor growing year in NZ?

Both NZ and AU have limited acres of hops to start with, a bad growing season just makes supply worse.

See I found it to be meh.

Jack, I read how Azacca is supposed to be really fruity and tropical, when I seemed to get a lot more floral, earthy and dank weed flavors. Maybe it was the beers I had which carried a huge malt bill that danked it down a bit, but still.

Keith I bought a 6-pack of the Founders Azacca beer a few months ago. I thought it was an OK-good beer. My wife enjoyed drinking more than I did. As I am typing this I don't really recall the specific aroma/flavors of this beer but I do recall that I thought the aroma/flavor level was subdued in that particular batch of beer. I also remember that the batch was relatively fresh (about 2 months old) so the beer should not have experienced much in terms of hop fade. Maybe Azacca is just not a potent hop?

    Cheers!

I found Azacca to be grassy in a Homebrew. I wasn't wild about Founders Azacca either.

Jeff, have you homebrewed using Azacca with other hops? I was contemplating brewing an Azacca/Mosaic IPA. Do you have any thoughts on this combination?

    Cheers!

Mine was Azacca with a little Jarrylo. I won't do that again. Mosaic may overpower Azacca, in a good way.

I sort of disagree, mandarina isn't on the same level as citra, mosaic, Galaxy, Amarillo, simcoe, Nelson and a couple others I'm missing. It's just not as punch you in the face. It's still in very high demand though/ either that or in short supply.

A couple others I see as top tier hops but aren't recognized as top tier quite yet- Azacca, and El Dorado

We did a few azacca SMaSH beers at the brewery I work at- I described the flavor as "strawberry marmalade, and papaya"

Idaho7 wont be the knew it hop. Its great in a single Hop IPA but really isnt strong enough for an Ipa using multiple hop varieties

I was going to mention the same hop. I've had a single hop IPA (taproom only experiment) at Avery which used only these hops. It was really good, but couldn't pick out any extremely unique characteristics about these hops. To me, they covered a nice range of classic flavors, without anything too negative about them. They were fairly floral and citrusy to my recollection. I'm sure we'll be seeing many more beers coming out soon which feature this hop variety.

I used Azacca with Citra and Mosaic and it was great. Most hops would be great with the other 2 though!
Anyway, I wasn't blown away by the Founders Azacca either, or their Mosaic Promise for that matter.
I've heard of Idaho 7, so I might have to look into that.
I just kegged a beer with Citra and Nuggetzilla/ Denali.
Thought I'd throw that out there.

I've had Mandarina and Ella too, but they didn't have the punch that Citra has, maybe good in backup roles. Same with Nelson, not great by itself, but solid. Of course, unless Toppling Goliath brews with it. Zeelander is great, but almost all of their beers are!

I would like to see more European varieties get more attention here in the stats.. Really enjoyed saphir, mandarina bavaria, etc. english EKG doesn't get the love it used to, same for french Aramis.

That new mexican varietal, neomexicanus, is pretty interesting too.

Personally, I'm getting a bit tired of the 'single hop series' trend. It was really fun for a while (lattitude 48 deconstructed was/is still a cool idea) but after having 'experimental pale ale feat. hop E5435834534905843' it started to get a bit old. I would rather have a tasty beer balanced by several varieties of hops/malts than a one-note single hop/malt bill experience. Just my opinion, of course.

While it's not brand new, Galaxy is definitely more and more popular now. It's the current "it" hop if you ask me.

whatever it is, i hope its something other than the citrusy forward hops that are all the rage now. im hoping for something more earthy and pungent in that way.

Have you tried any beers which feature the Neomexicanus hops? That might be something you would like.

The Sierra Nevada beer that was brewed solely using Neomexicanus hops had a predominant aroma/flavor of “earthy” for my palate.

At a recent event (May 2016) I heard two different brewers cite Hallertau Blanc and Mandarina Bavaria as relatively new go-to aroma hops for their IPA's. The samples were more floral and fruity than piney.

Galaxy is already very popular and used in alot of stuff. Therefore cant be the next "it".

Barbe Rouge? It's got a really different thing going on... strawberry and cantaloupe. I'm loving the eponymous IPA from Burlington Beer Co. and it looks like Schlafly has been doing one too.
