These are all great BP beers:
    Big Eye
    Dorado
    Sculpin
    Victory at Sea
    Tongue Buckler
    Fathom
    Indra Kunindra
    Black Marlin
    Sea Monster

BP has been plunging downhill recently imo. The more 200bbl fermenters they add to increase ramp up, the more the quality has been dropping. Sculpin being the worst offender. I hope they don't ruin VaS next.

Haven't been thrilled at all with BP's IPAs lately - I don't know if my palate is just spoiled by Alpine or if their quality is actually suffering, but Sculpin is no longer impressing me like it once did.

Really hope the next batch of VaS is up to snuff - that's a great beer.

I'd recommend buying a case of VaS. Put it in the fridge. Don't open any for at least a month. It's released way too hot each year.

I've had enough Sculpin from bombers, draft, and 12oz recently, all fresh, to know it's seriously changed.

Rather than argue about your opinion of the brewery, let's look at a couple of facts:

First off, BP is not a "new" brewery. They've been around since mid-90s. If you weren't trying to imply that they were "new," you should reconsider how you word your opinions. Secondly, their scores on BA of their year-round offerings are very comparable to those of Alesmith (high 3s, low 4s).

Even if you think Alesmith is better, it doesn't negate the fact that BP still makes good beer.

Not to mention that BP Scripps Ranch has an awesome new tasting room and patio. They also doubled the amount of taps they have.

These are simply my opinions, don't get all butt hurt.

The implication was that new breweries are following the same model as BP, making very creative mediocre beer, not that BP is a new brewery.

The ratings to me show that BP have 1/3 of their beers rated over a 4. While Alesmith have 3/4 of their beers rated over a 4.

Who makes good beer is highly subjective. I have a buddy who won't even try other beers because he thinks miller nailed it the first time. I tell him he is wrong, he tells me I am wrong, and then we drink together. Just hopefully not at BP.

I just wish BP would work on consistently making Sculpin, VaS, and Dorado world-class while keeping their other offerings up to par and not focus so much about making "Swiss Miss Candy Cane Black Marlin" and "Thai Lemon Avocado Basil Wahoo" or whatever.

You mean to tell me that you did not love the Ghost Chili - Toffee Piper Down, aged in Dr. McGillicuddy soaked eucalyptus barrels?

I really like the weird flavors. Habanero Sculpin is unbeatable in the pepper-beer category. Thai Chili Lime Wahoo Wheat is outstanding. Indra Kunindra is really interesting and well-executed. The Jalapeno Smoke Screen is fantastic, tasting just like a smoked jalapeno.

Funny enough, I don't love VaS. I think the vanilla is too strong. The barrel-aged version is incredible though.

I don't think there's anything wrong with making funky, weird beers. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't (just ask The Bruery.) I'd still rather drink BP than the crap Green Flash has been pooping out lately.

I think BP does too many experimental beers, but AleSmith does not do enough. So there.

    We need more of these

I like Alesmith more, but I still enjoy BP as a great local brewery. Sebowski said it best, beer lovers in SD have way different problems than the majority of the country/world.
My dilemma during the past week, "which Alpine night should I go to?"

    Touche.

The millions of Speedway variations aside, they've done some really good one offs that I wish they'd do more. I think they've saturated the Speedway market.

Speaking of which, weren't they going to bottle some of the Speedways w/ diff. coffee additions?

I keep wondering about that too. I would love to see different variants of speedway bottled. I love going to the tap room and seeing different variants of speedway on. That is typically all I order as I have had the other stuff numerous times, and can get them almost anywhere. The speedway variants seem to be the only new/unique things on tap... and they are always amazing.

How did a thread about the Lost Abbey tasting room devolve into Ballast Point versus Alesmith?
