Oh, I know the "Standard Krug" very well. But Ayinger uses a tall, slimmer version - and as I've said, the same one Franziskaner is now using - exclusively for the wooden cask version of Jahrhundert Bier at Speis und trank. A special vessel for a special beer, perhaps.

Franziskaner seems to be in the same line of thought. Still, my point stands. Someone else in Munich is already using it. And I wouldn't be surprised if there are more to be found.

Yeah... probably not in Bavaria. I think most immediately think "Weizen" when they think Franziskaner, but not Zwickel. Unlike here in the U.S., both are well known "styles" in Southern Germany.

Not to mention, not all of Franziskaner beers are unfiltered.

Quick Google search yields a couple images.

This one is from their Facebook page (I couldn't help it--everything looked too good not to post ):

I'd have to dig through my photos, but have at least one picture of the tall and slim krug that the Jahrhundert was served in (Bayerischer Anstich) when I was there several years ago.

    Edit: Here's another

Ok I never saw those tall earthen mugs, except for the Bayreuther ones.... They are half litre, right? They look kinda like the 1 litre version of the "standard" mugs in their proportions...

Correct, they're half-litres. They're probably about as tall as the 'standard' mugs, just not as wide in diameter.

Huh,how can they be as tall as the standard mugs while being smaller in diameter, since both are 0,5l? They surely look taller in those picutres..

Sorry, I see how what I wrote could be confusing, but you did say that they looked like 'standard' 1L mugs, so that's how I crafted my response--in reference to those. To repeat: The Ayinger mugs are about as tall as a 'standard' 1L mug, not the .5.

I got it -- the "standard" "mug" I always got in Munich was the 1 liter Maß or Maßkrug. None of this measley half liter stuff.

Just to add my €0,02, Kulturbrauerei in Heidelberg also uses the tall half-liter Steinkrugs.

Considering the brands history of brewing lager beer it only makes sense that they would reach back past the 70s to brew a bottom fermented beer again I think, particularly if the idea is to produce a "retro beer" which seems to be the idea. No stranger than the brewery/brand being switched over to weissbier brewing in the first place. That always struck me as odd, then again Spaten in turn overtook the "ur-Märzen" brand from Franziskaner, so the company is obviously no stranger to changing their brands.

Aigan, somehow I find this mug question way more interesting and fascinating than it has any right to be.
I still assume those tall, 0,5l mugs are a more recent thing. I mean, the short mugs have been around a long time, and yes also with munich area breweries- I've seen them with HB, Augustiner, Ayinger, Löwenbräu and Paulaner labels..
The tall ones seem to me like a recent invention to seem more "elegant" and "more modern" while also remaining "rustic" and "traditional". Pretty much in a nutshell what is happening in munich culturally in many ways, while the franconians stay true to their "rustic ways" for the most part (except of Bayreuther Aktienbrauerei aka Maisel's I've never seen tall, slim mugs there...)

Or here in Italy, where many people have a hard time understanding any unfiltered beer isn't a "weisse."

Now that's a different problem altogether! Sort of like over here where so many don't understand that a Pale Wheat Ale isn't at all the same as a Bavarian Hefeweizen... no matter if it has "Hefe" in its title. :astonished:

99% of beer glasses/mugs in Germany come from either Sahm or Rastal.

It took a year and a few months, but we started getting Fastenbier in Denver. Something tells me I'm the only one who cares.

In placing my own glassware orders for Bierkeller, I noticed that Sahm now stocks a number of tall Kruege, in various shapes and sizes (including lots of 0.5 liters). http://www.sahm.de/en/categories/beer/products (see esp. Denver Stein, Flora, Lohengrin, Maximilian Stein, and Saga). I suspect these places are taking advantage of these new offerings in order to have their products stand out...? As for Bierkeller, only Kruege we are doing are the Bayerischer Kruege in 0.5, like you see all over Franconia.

Chris, does that mean your stores are receiving bottles from 2015?

    Cheers!

Nah, they're from this year. I just found it odd that we didn't get any last year and the stock this year showed up at a random time. I'm hoping we'll eventually get Spezial again someday. It was never common, but we did get some here and there. I haven't seen any in probably 5 years.

I'm probably the only one who cares in St. Louis. We got it last year. When this year's came out the distributor tried to foist off their remaining stock from last year. At least we got fresh 1516 this year.
