Shilkmake might be my favorite so far, tbh.

I enjoyed Calamansi for it's creamesicle quality. I've pretty much enjoyed all the Milk Shake variations I've tried. Though peach was my favorite so far.

I don't disagree with any of that. I guess what I don't understand is why beer nerd hop heads that seemingly love hop forward in your face IPAs are going so crazy over them. The Kalamansi is currently a 4.59 on Untappd. Even with only around 500 check-ins that is insane!

I don't think those types of people are mutually exclusive. As you stated in your previous post you have a preference for 'in your face hops.' I think a lot of people do, too, but also really enjoy the flavor and different approach the Milkshake series has. Again, it sounds like you have a strong preference in certain qualities in your IPAs, while a large majority of Tired Hands consumers may have the same level of appreciation and enjoyment of both.

Exclusivity plays a part. If I drive 3hrs round trip and wait another few in line to drop a couple hundred bucks on lunch, fills and cans at the Ferm, I am not liable to give any beer less than a 4 on Untappd - or else I feel like I wasted my day. Now, that's not a conscious thought that I have, but I definitely think it is an influence on people.

I've had a few from the series that were pretty good and were not overly sweet - Passionfruit is the first that comes to mind. The Kalamansi, to me, was on an entirely different level though. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I personally have no doubt that others have similar unconscious reactions as you mention here. I would suggest that it is just human nature that when you invest so much (time, money, travel, etc.) into something it will indeed influence your perceptions.

    Cheers!

I know of one or two people who will rate beers on Untappd at pretty much the average score. It's almost as if seeing it first completely influences what they should be judging it by.,

Good point. If I see higher than a 4.2, I know I am in for a treat, and adjust my expectations similarly. Note: this doesn't go for sours because all of my favorite sours are rated 3.75 or less. Dumb people.

I wonder if there is a mathematical way to determine "hype" or "exclusivity" and factor it out of the scores of those beers. Math nerds apply here - I'm a simple IT guy.

It's not mathematical, but just do a blind tasting without knowing the beers involved. You'll be mostly shocked at the results.

    I doubt it.

Humans are imperfect beings and we are influenced by all manner of things. You mention the two items of hype and exclusivity but there are lots of others things that influence us:
    • The name of the brewery (e.g., if Tired Hands makes this beer it just gotta be good)
    • Appearance (e.g., Boy, that beer just looks so "juicy" and "tasty")
    • etc.
The only way to mitigate (eliminate?) these influences is to drink a beer completely blind (and for the case of hazy beers either in an opaque cup or blindfolded) and provide your tasting impressions in that context. Needless to say but beer ratings on the various websites (BA, Ratebeer, Untapped, etc.) are not conducted in this manner.

    Cheers!

I did this once at a birthday. It was a very humbling experience for about 10 out of the 11 of us.
We all had a score card by the end of the night and as each beer got unveiled, we all wanted to launch ourselves onto an operating airplane propeller.

Pass. Since HopHands now sucks, 1/2 of American Youth will be off.

Had American Youth taster on line last week for the Kalamansi/Dystopian Forest release and thought it was pretty good, but I've always thought it was better than HopHands.

Ah I love the repeat releases. Not calling you out 'Swift' (because you are far from the only one who posts this) but I really do enjoy the 'meh' sentiment followed by the notion that you'll be there to pick up multiple 4-packs. I enjoy Jean's beer quite a bit, actually more than that, but it really does reinforce the notion that Jean is in essence 'printing money week after week' with these can releases as some other BA's have alluded to. (To me, good for him, this is exactly what any entrepreneur wants). It just amazes me that people who simply are mediocre about a beer (again not just you, I see the same sentiment here and elsewhere) will still show up and shell out whatever the cost of admission is. It reminds me of the guys that post on Facebook or wherever about how 'buttery' some of their cans are all the time, yet, every release they are either ISO or standing in line for the next can release.

I'm only going because I invested 30 bucks into a new chair and want to get some use out of it. Feel free to move it, piss on it, etc.

Had Kalamansi last night. Liked it. Not bad, not better than the Peach(?), but good enough. Girlfriend tried it, asked me if it was a Mimosa Beer... I kinda can understand that I guess?

Still enjoyed it. Having Dystopian tonight.
