A lot of my inventory is used for trading. Tired Hands releases means that my steady flow of Bissell Brothers, Other Half, Veil and Monkish continues. I certainly keep a couple 4pks for myself but my interest in their release is also directly tied to if people I trade with are interested. I think that this is a majority of the people who go to every release. Its not that we just shell out money when we are "meh" about a beer - we shell out money because it gives us access to beer from all over the country.

Your post reminded me of an old Yogi Berra quote: “Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded”.

    Cheers!

I think this one will be pretty low key. I'm going to go around 6 and try and get high road. Depending on the price of American youth I might try that too.

maybe it's just me, but i would definitely be more inclined to be critical of a beer i invested a lot of time in acquiring. i don't think it would be hard to determine how much you like a beer if you didn't find the taste agreeable.
theory certainly doesn't seem to ring true here with all the meh & trading going around. count me in that boat, why not get something i know i like?

missed High Road last time around & remember it selling out close to 7pm, so i am going to assume it's a popular one. very hard to find dipas that aren't all malty, so let's see...

....but we are getting something we know we like...in order for me to get what I like, I need to have something to trade...which is Tired Hands...don't get me wrong - Tired Hands beer is one of my favorites. I LOVE their beer. But I have access to them all the time. I drink it on draft regularly, so the "meh" is not in regard to the taste of the beer, the "meh" is in regard to "I have that a lot, I don't need a lot for myself, however, I can get other things I want to try for it so maybe I will go pick up a few 4pks"

Very strange to me that this practice somehow has some kind of negative connotation to it?

I know where you are coming from though. I have the same issue with Carton/Kane. I have access to it so easily, that it's nice to have them even if you might not want the whole pack, just because there is someone out in the country looking for the same thing you have that you might not necessarily want in the moment.

It might be "meh" to the possessor but it could be highly sought out by someone else.

It's funny, because this is my position right now in trying to get Tired Hands and Treehouse.

I gave up. Literally the worst people to trade with IMO...but I am looking for more Carton. We should be friends!

Is there some other way to try craft beer from other parts of the country easily, without trading? Am I missing something? :astonished:

I don't mind trading (I've done a bit myself) but I do think it adds to the craziness of releases and frustrations over not being able to just (gasp) show up during normal business hours and grab some beer.

BeerAdvocate, the website for trading beer by people who hate beer trading

People like to think they are holier than thou and only support their local brewery, while others hoard beer to ship to Communists or something. I make no mistake - I trade local beer all the time. But even more so, I drink it. Works out pretty well and if I end up in Beer Hell, oh well.

i have no idea what is wrong with what wrote. i don't feel that i was being negative at all. you basically repeated my same logic back to me. i was (rather tersely, maybe) lumping thoughts on the comments talking about beers being rated higher than perhaps they should be solely on hype. i don't identify with that. beer is subject to taste. if i don't like it and someone else wants to try it, by all means.
    "Cheers!" to that.

really loving the sense of community in this thread. ignoring people who joke about drunk driving casually and then making something out of nothing the next.

not knocking you for doing it, or others as many do exactly what you just wrote but for me, I can't make it over to these releases pretty much ever. Unless the cans can make it to like 8-9 pm I just have no chance. I occasionally have some friends who will mule for cost plus a few $'s etc but as the trade power of TH cans grows or the secondary $ value grows it in turn diminishes the people willing to lend a hand and mule. Which i also get, as if i was going over and spending the time/money I can't say i'd want to always mule for friends at cost plus a few $'s when i know others are getting more in trade and sale.

I think the limits have been helping spread things around a bit more, they are getting a feel for their hot releases and such and leveling it the best they seem to be able to.

The other disappointing thing is that often the beers that are special and they are canning aren't available for growler fills. Before the canning machine these beers would be available for fills and those would last normally 2 days or more allowing the opportunity to make it over to get something if i really wanted to. Toss in the lack of bottles the past 4 months and i'm just starting to wain on my desire to support one of if not my favorite breweries as their choices in how they are operating/direction the future seems to be heading. I have other friends who are feeling similar. I'm also kind of shocked at the cafe and how to me the quality of beer there has declined the past 6-8 months. I half expected they would keep some heavy hitters for the cafe but they seem to be happy with their direction in both establishments. I feel the creative freedom being allowed over at the cafe though may be a bit too free when what has been being produced is imo lackluster the majority of the time since the Ferm opened.

I feel it's hard to see things from the outside when the $'s keep coming in and expansion keeps occurring. Hard to appreciate constructive criticism when no matter what you do you end up being rewarded for your efforts is I guess my problem with TH of late.

You are buying something at local market price that you don't want, taking it out of supply from people who do want it, and then trading it for something that is higher in value to you. That's no different than ticket scalping which also has a negative connotation. It's not hard to see why some people don't like what you are doing.

Yup, from a financial reward perspective there is no incentive to change things.

There may be motivations beyond the financials for Jean to make some changes, though?

    Cheers!
