They had both kinds, too- light and dark .

For me I guess it was Heineken Dark, I used to drink it by the case.

Your first beer is usually the first love, for me it was Miller High Life at around 17. I still pick up a 6 pack for the memories. Although the first beer I ever tasted was Jaxx around 14 [ dad let try a sip.]

Good point, I drank dark Euro lagers for years before I even met one born in the USA.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was the first beer I really loved. Barely drink it anymore, too mild for me now. Later, Lagunitas Imperial Red. That was the trigger to me branching out to everything under the sun. I want to drink it again, but I haven't seen it in many years.

    Hmmmm...

The first beer that I thought I loved was Little Kings Cream Ale (in the 7 oz bottles).

The first beer I fell in love with is Anchor Steam.

My current love is Tustin Brewing (CA) Pale Ale. Freshness never tasted so good!

For me it was Troegs Troegenator Doppelbock. It was the beer that sucked me into the craft scene. The minute that beer touched my lips I knew that I wouldn't touch another Budweiser product again.

Almost embarrassed to admit this but back in the day my favorite beer was Rolling Rock. I thought I was one cool trend setter with my friends now you would have to tie me down and water board me with that swill.

Growing up in Indiana in the 70's there wasn't much positive variation to speak of. My best friend's sister would pick beer up for us since she was over 21 and she'd usually get either Michelob or Miller. My brother-in-law's stepfather was from Germany and he'd always have Beck's or Beck's Dark and trying the Dark convinced me that there was a flavor out there that was what I was looking for. I do remember getting Heineken Dark and not caring for it.
I suppose I had Guinness at some point in the early 80's to turn me on to dark beers in a bigger way, and I know I had Sierra Nevada Pale Ale from the beer-of-the-month club but I honestly don't remember the beer that really pushed me away from American Standard for good. I think I more or less stopped drinking beer until I received a homebrew kit for Christmas '96 - three kits, Stout, IPA and Pale Ale. Dry yeast packets, and they were all horrible as I recall. Suffered through them, bought a few books, and eventually with the switch to yeast in smack packs I was able to get to a satisfactory and more consistent finished product.
The key for me as a homebrewer (extract, anyway) was Munton's Nut Brown Ale 4# can. I'd add one pound of either light dry malt extract or honey and a couple of ounces of Tettnager or Hallertau hops with Bavarian lager yeast in my 5-gallon carboy and that became my favorite beer for a few years. Then the cans became impossible to find locally and I just sort of experiment nowadays.

Trends come and go. At one point Miller Genuine Draft was cutting edge, and then the 'Ice' beers and God knows what other things the marketing focus groups turned us on to. Not beer, but you had clear versions of Pepsi and eventually Zima for the drinking crowd. But I'll take an oatmeal stout or dark German lager any day.

There is that elusive 'first beer' taste that you always search for. For me it was sips of my Dad's Pabst Blue Ribbon which back in the early 70's had a distinctive metallic 'tang' that I really liked. I think it was probably mostly just that my tongue hadn't caught on to what I was doing to it. Every once in a while I'll have some cheap-ass beer and for a moment it takes me back...

Ahh, yes. Little Kings. Went through quite a few cases of those 7 oz bottles when I was going to Ball State University. I also remember Falstaff in returnable bottles, $3.99/case and they had trivia questions under the caps. Bad beer, good times.

Geez, I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed Lowenbrau back in around '81-82. Maybe that WAS the first beer I fell in love with...
