I was excited to see Greenhouse on my weekly shopping trip today. The last batch Houston got was #41. I turned the can over to see the batch # and hop variety....and nothing. Nothing on the bottom of can at all. I then checked the Zoe, A Pale Mosaic and Porter Culture they had next to it and none had any dating. I'm hoping there's an excuse like a broken stamping machine. If this is the new norm, I'm out on Hops and Grain. When did this start happening?
I've noticed this for awhile. Sometimes its a date, sometimes its a batch #, sometimes its nothing at all. Not sure whats going on there but as much as I enjoy Zoe, Greenhouse, and A Pale Mosaic, I'm not buying them without a canned on date. That pretty much goes for all the beer I buy these days. Speaking of that, I really wish Real Ale would do a bottle on date rather than a Best By date. Their 20th anny rye IPA is dated out like 8 months or something crazy
I hope Aaron G. doesn't mind me linking to his Untappd. I knew I had seen someone take a picture like that there.
All hops & grain cans now have a best by date stamped on them. The newest batch of greenhouse should say wakatu/meridian on it I believe along with a best by date Any cans without a date stamp are prior to April canned as there was an issue with the old stamper and a new one was gotten. At that time they also changed from canned date to best by. I believe the best by date is 6 weeks out for IPA
I really wanted to pick up some Greenhouse at HEB in Fairfield. There was a date on the can, but it was unreadable. Not sure if this was done by the brewery or HEB, but I just passed it right by and got something else.
Real Ale has been putting packaging dates on their beers (both cans and bottles) for a while now. It's in Julian format right below the best by date. The bomber of 20th I picked up this morning at HEB reads 116, meaning it was bottled on 4/25.
Awesome, I didn't realize that. I will be drinking more Full Moon now as long as I can find it fresh.
Two more stores today and both had new supplies of Greenhouse and A Pale Mosaic. Neither had any stampings on the bottom. I find it hard to believe that H&G or the distributer is all of a sudden filling previously empty shelves with beer from before April.
It's fresh beer. They are having a hard time with the laser date printer. Apparently very temperamental machines.
I bought some Zoe at Spec's yesterday, no date on cans but it was in a fridge so I figured odds were it was in good shape. Nope, super stale. No more hoppy beer without date stamps for me
I reluctantly bought some Pale Mosaic recently from East 1st that had no date. Tasted great. But obviously there is risk involved.
Forgot to update last week.... I assume it was the fresh batch #46, but it was one of the weaker recipes that I've had. I'm back on "out" until they start dating again. Their website is totally outdated too.
Bought some Pale Mosaic last week...under the promise from the random CM beer dude that they were fresh within the week...tasted great as usual
A beer like Pale Mosaic I would not be too concerned with at stores like that. As soon as you get to non-local national brands, I would never touch without dates.
