Also nearby is Bridgetown Beerhouse. It's a few blocks north of Ecliptic. They always have a good selection of bottles & cans to go.

Ecliptic had bottles when I was there, but I didn't look enough to see what the selection was.

All the recommendations were perfect. Apex was great for playing cards and the tap menu was amazing. Hop and vine was closed so I was unable to do brunch there but there is no shortage of brunch in portland. Solera/everybodys were my two favorite breweries of the Gorge trip. Probably wouldn't have done either without this thread. If anybody else is doing the Gorge breweries, grab the passports. We didn't know about it till we had already been to four of em.

I was also able to discover a beer my girlfriend loves at great notion, the blueberry muffin. She always tries all my beers but never likes any, so it was fun to find her something to fall in love with.

I can't wait for my next trip, hopefully I can tempt my girl with great notion to make it a yearly thing.

My favorites which are made in Portland:
    • Breakside IPA
    • Ex Novo Eliot IPA
    • Fat Head's Semper FiPA

My favorites which are made elsewhere and available in Portland:
    • Barley Brown's Ratchet Strap
    • Sunriver Vicious Mosquito
    • Fort George 2016 3-Way IPA
Some of these may change from time to time, but the Breakside and Barley Brown's entries have a pretty much permanent spot on these lists.

I've got a lot of digging left to do in this thread, but, my wife and I are (finally) going to be in Portland next week. Going to be visiting a few breweries and picking up some beer. Still trying to confirm where we're staying, but very much looking forward to the trip. Going to get to Cascade and HotD, also want to check out Great Notion, Commons, Breakside, Ex Novo, Laurelwood, and a few others. Not sure how many kegs we'll be able to fit in the rental but we will find out!

Hey guys, a bit early but I need to start planning...

Myself and some friends are thinking of driving down for a few days from BC for Zwanze Day, and was hoping for some information. Tried to search but only found the 2014 thread. Probably just dumb. Anyways!

How was the event at Apex last year? The 2014 thread made it sound pretty laid back... Any busier, or about the same? Wait in line for tickets for what Cantillion they have on tap? Have to get there super early? Anyone remember what they had for 2015?

    Thanks!

2015 there were no tickets, people were lined up around the block a few hours before the event started. Once things got rolling though, it was pretty easy to get to the bar and grab a beer. Classic Gueuze, Iris, Vigneronne, Rose, Kriek (maybe?), and Zwanze were on tap. $6 for 6oz for all of them I believe.

Testify, brother. The regular Breakside IPA is a go-to in this household. Easy-to-get, inexpensive, and fantastic. What's not to love?

In "our" household it's the wanderlust, but otherwise, I'd echo everything you said.

I sent a bottle as an extra to my SEPA trading partner a couple weeks ago, and he couldn't believe how much better the wanderlust tasted in comparison to when he tried it at the brewpub some years ago. Again, that's been my reaction as well (not impressed initially, but now it's my go to, fall back IPA whenever I can't find anything I want at the store). I'm not sure exactly what they did at Breakside, but at least to me, Wanderlust is much better today than when I first tried several years back.

Will be in town in a few weeks for business. The list that has been assembled is stellar!

Which of these breweries is currently cranking out the best hop bombs? Great Notion seems like they may be the front runner from what I've heard, but I don't want to miss out on the best, juicy hoppy ales pdx has to offer. Cheers!

It probably depends on the style of IPA/DIPA that you like. I personally like a little bitterness in my IPA's, which is why I'm not a huge fan of the GN beers (they're good, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't put them in my top 10). However, if you're a fan of the so called Vermont/New England IPA's, then Great Notion beers will be right up your alley.

Otherwise, I would recommend beers like Hop Venom, Notorious, pretty much anything Barley Brown makes in an IPA/DIPA, Wanderlust, pretty much all the IPA/DIPA's from Fat Heads (some are better than others, and the DIPA's can be a bit hot at times, but they're undeniably pretty good), the Bodhizafa, Sticky Hands, the new Red, White and Boom from Block 15... that should probably be enough to get you started.

I'm staying at The Hotel Deluxe for work later this month. I've perused some of the maps in the initial post, but I'm wondering if the area is as desolate beer wise as beer mapping shows? Any cool places in easy walking distance?

I'm hoping the Portland Biketown is up and running and I can get around that way to explore more.

One thing to also consider is that most of Portland's blocks are actually 1/3rd blocks, so something like 20 blocks might sound far by in reality it's not.

That said if the Bike sharing system isn't up and you still don't feel like walking our mass transit system is $5 for a day pass and APEX, BeerMongers and a bunch of the inner SE options are just a short bus/MAX/Street car ride away.

If you have an iphone there's a really good transit app called PDXBUS to help you get around.

Um, I think you're off by a decimal place all around.

But @honkduh still makes a good point. To call that area "desolate" with respect to beer is just...yeah. That's not accurate. And the fact that you are about 2 minutes away from a Blue/Red Line MAX stop gives you even more options.

You can walk down to Yamhill and SW 10th and take the Streetcar to 10th & Couch (pronounced "cooch," no lie). Walk one small block west, then another one north, and you're at Deschutes. From there you go 2 blocks west and half a block south to reach Fat Head's. From there you can walk to Bailey's Taproom in less than 10 minutes. Go around the corner to check out Bailey's upstairs place, called The Upper Lip.

If nothing else, walk across the street from your hotel and check out the popup mini golf course at 15th and Yamhill. They offer a couple dozen craft beers in cans.
