Just checking in as I tend to do on occasion. This check-in was prompted by yet another ridiculous beer related event that occurred outside of DC yesterday (see Tweet below):

    https://twitter.com/Aslin_BeerCo/status/744292845062922240

This brewery has only been open for a few months and it is without a doubt really good. They are pumping out super trendy NE IPAs that are very high quality. Anyway, the place is located way out in suburban Virginia and it's tiny (read: characteristics that I figured may limit exposure/growth/whatever). I knew it would only be a matter of time until the traders descended, but it happened in full force yesterday.

People waited for 5 hours to get into the place. The kegs of their 2 IPAs were kicked by about 3PM and they ended up completely selling out of beer (to the point that they're closed until Thursday).

Breakside. Bale Breaker. Pfriem. Room to breathe. I miss these things. Enjoy them everyone!

I was recently at the Three Needs in Burlington, VT - also sold out of all house beer, no special event or anything! I'm guessing that perhaps we'll see more of this in the future.

BTW, I miss the PNW as well!

Holy Mountain is coming to DC soon (event at Churchkey. Couldn't tell from the wording if it's a one off event or what), I'm really curious what the response is going to be like.

Thats crazy. So happy i live up here,
Its great to see "craft" beer doing so well nationwide, but this extreme sh*t screams FAD to me.
Im off down the local brewpub to have a cask bitter.

i use to live in DC. knew plenty of dudes who would make the drive to vermont and back (~20 hrs total) just to buy cases of heady topper and visit hill farmstead. that's their idea of a vacation. not condemning or celebrating it, but waiting 5 hrs for an IPA probably seems downright reasonable to these folks.

I suppose the "periodic" in the title refers to how often you will post, and not how often you actually expect to find yourself missing the NW? :slight_frown:

We'll do our part to keep it real, and chill, for you, for whenever you should be able to make it back it here...

You are correct. I am in a state of perpetually missing the PNW, however, living near DC really isn't that bad. There is a lot to like here, but every once in awhile something happens that just leave me shaking my head.

This isn't my first post in this series by the way, and I'm sure it won't be the last. Just waiting on some motivation.

i'm more curious about how the NYC events came about. they partnered with shelton brothers to make that happen.

Sounds like limited distribution on a regular basis for NYC via Shelton Brothers...

I miss the PNW whenever I go back home to the South.

But even that was changing the last time I went back, and now I'm legitimately curious to see what's happening. I think the PNW is still hands-down the best place to drink great beer with minimal fuss, but as craft spreads I'm legitimately curious to see how things turn out in places less hop-driven.

Now, now, now - Reston/ Herndon aren't all THAT far out in the suburbs :-) People i know (including myself) used to drive up to Baltimore from DC for a couple of beers even on a non beer event day. Now, living in the PNW, I occasionally grumble about having to drive 15 minutes to Upright.

I had to go to Corvallis for work a few weeks ago and stopped by the new Block 15 facility at 3pm on a Friday. Maybe 15 people there, 10-12 stellar beers on tap, 2014 Super Nebula in bottles to drink on premise.

we have it pretty good out here

that's what it sounded like to me, but I hope they are just latching onto Shelton Brother's for periodic events in NYC. in DC, you don't need a distributor, so they wouldn't need any partnerships to make events in that city happen. since they are a small volume brewer, doesn't seem like regular distribution would make much business sense.

Grimm (out of NYC) does sporadic retail distribution here and other places via Shelton, so it wouldn't surprise me if small amounts are regularly distributed to NYC.

true. and they did a collab with other half, too, right? looks like they are putting in some roots all across the country with collabs and distro. seems like whatever they are doing, they are having fun with it.

Always kind of bugs me (but not enough to do anything about it) when local businesses have a desire to move into the NYC scene. Beechers, Stumptown, etc. Aren't we good enough?

turns out i had master of karate when I was DC in April and it was so memorable i didn't even check it in. only reason i do remember it is this: it's got to be the ugliest beer i've ever drank (and no way near the tastiest). people are crazy for waiting for shit like this. the constant stream of 5/5 ratings is absurd.

sorry for momentarily turning this into a "periodic i don't miss DC thread".

I felt a pang of yearning when I visited Machine House a few days ago. Walking into the place felt strange because I knew it was something I would not be doing very often in the future. That was my spot ... and now it's not. I love living in Bellingham so far but I am gonna miss the hell out of Machine House. That feeling I experienced made me think of this thread!

Well, at least The Local carries Machine House semi-regularly, so you've got that going for you, which is nice.
