I know summer just technically began, but is anyone else already craving Oktoberfest beers? Even though summer beers are some of my favorite styles - wits, helles, pilsners - I can't wait for Sam Adams Octoberfest, Ayinger's Marzen (my hands-down favorite), Metropolitan's Afterburner, and a host of others.

    Is it fall yet?

No, but July is next month. You might see some popping up then.

And yes, I'm craving them. But I can wait, I'll binge on Oktoberfests when the time comes...and binge I do.

I crave them year round actually... Just had a sixer of Spaten the other night with some brats...really anticipating that SN Oktoberfest though. I'm buying that stuff by the case this year...

I'm always down for a good märzen. Can't wait to try this years Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest collab. with Mahr Braü. Last years was incredible, perhaps beer of year for me.

    I agree.
O-Fest brews (especially Märzen, which I much prefer over the modern helles versions) are good any time of the year.
I had some Hacker-Pschorr O-Fest last week. I've found age not to be so much of an issue either with most of these brews.
The way I look at it, in modern times there is really no reason (other than personal preference) to drink "seasonally".

Not really. I started doing this thing where I drink seasonal beers during the season they're intended. I've found that the season doesn't seem to last long enough (from a beer perspective). Time flies or I'm not drinking enough beer.

For some styles my personal preference is to drink seasonally. Oktoberfests are one of those. The Germans have been doing it for quite some time.

I find when a beer goes year round, I tend to drink less of it, and forget about it. There's SO much beer on the shelves these days, it gives me an excuse to revisit an old favorite. The other benefit is, you know the beer is fresh (well, fresher at least). Specifically for imports, the seasonal beers are your best shot at consuming some of your favorites fresh (especially those that don't bottle date).

I could drink Oktoberfests year round as well.

In fact I stocked up last year and was drinking them through January.

I do like them being seasonal, however, since that helps me sort through what's fresh or not.

I'll chime in with the others who could drink this year round. Want them fresh though and around here that happens later on when the Summer heat blast is on the wan.

OMG...I have been remiss! How the hell did I forget to include SN's Oktoberfest!? Last year's was stellar - I drank the hell out of it and I'm very much looking forward to this year's release as well. Such a great, easy-drinking, perfect-for-fall beer.

And ditto on drinking them year-round. Sure, when the craving is super intense, I'll reach for a nice Vienna or amber lager, but it's just not the same, you know? Not. The. Same.

One other side effect of these Oktoberfest cravings: The insatiable urge to watch football and down a little cheese and sausage plate. Such a wonderful pairing right there.

Given the level of expectation and the fact that it will be a different beer this year, I am not looking forward to all of the "last year's was better" posts about the forthcoming Sierra Nevada beer.

Vienna style beer and a cheese/sausage plate, hmm, I need to go to the store.

I always crave Oktoberfests. I'm as big a hop-head as any, but if I had to drink one style the rest of my life, it would be OFest and I would never think twice about it.

I agree. Living where I do the flavors and smells of Oktoberfest beers are a benchmark for seasonal change for me, personally.

That having been said, I can't wait for 5 Rabbit Vida y Muerte, far and away my all-time favorite!
