My local brew pub has a year round beer called Hathor's Red Lager which could pass for an Oktoberfest. They brew a somewhat different beer each year that is called an Oktoberfest.

And there will be the comments of "This is not a 'good' Oktoberfest since they used non-traditional hops to brew this beer".

    Cheers!

Was actually just thinking this the other day, Marzen's are so good.

Fortunately went up to a little brew-pub in the White Mountains of New Hampshire called Schilling, they have a solid, super-fresh Marzen on tap. If you are ever in the area, that place is definitely a go-to.

Not quite ready to drink them right this minute, but holler at me around 1st week of September when the weather starts to cool off a bit. I, too, am looking forward to the Sierra Nevada/Mahr's collaboration. I enjoyed the version they released last fall and my hope is that they raise the bar as far as quality goes.
I'll also be looking for Ayinger's (probably my favorite "fall" beer - wish they came in 6 packs instead of single serve bottles) and Hacker Pschorr's

Curious as to everyone's favorite Oktoberfest beer? I said Ayinger, which is true, but I also love and believe NG's Staghorn is probably the best American made version out there. Will drink that beer all day long.

Love SN Oktoberfest, outside Mectoberfest from OMB in Charlotte it was my favorite from last year.

I would prefer Oktoberfest beers to take up the pumpkin beer shelf space. I don't drink much Oktoberfest, but I drink a hell of a lot more of it than that stupid orange vegetable crap.

I would agree with Ayinger. I think SN puts out a damn fine Oktoberfest.

You know, here's the thing: I enjoy a good pumpkin beer. Hate to admit it, but I do. Each year when fall rolls around, I can't help it. I want a bottle or two of Pumking, Warlock, Headless Heron, and Point Brewing's Whole Hog. But it's always fleeting, you know? I have one, I enjoy it, I save the other for a dessert pairing for Thanksgiving, and then I move on.

With Oktoberfests on the other hand, I drink them from the second they show up on shelves until long after I should - in fact, I bought an Ayinger this past January - one of the last around - and really enjoyed it. Point being, pumpkin beers last about 3 weeks for me whereas Oktoberfests last much longer.

Real point being: I kinda wish they'd replace pumpkin beers as well...at least until the Thanksgiving dessert cart rolls out.

I agree maybe they should name "not as good as last years Oktoberfest" and save drinkers the bother:wink:.

"Curious as to everyone's favorite Oktoberfest beer?"

For the past few years (5+ years) my absolute favorite Oktoberfest was (is) Sly Fox Oktoberfest.

Some of my other favorites were (are): Ayinger, Weihenstephaner, Firestone Walker, Stoudts, ...

    Cheers!

They gave it an interesting name of Oaktoberfest: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2210/45148/

No oak was used in brewing this beer.

    Cheers!

The problem, for me at least, is that I live in Pittsburgh, so Pumking and Warlock have been jammed down my throat because of ST trying to get their name big here with their new site opening and all. And I will admit myself, I do buy 2 bottle of each because my fiancée will actually drink them, though I take a sip and remember, oh yeah, I don't really enjoy this. I think the reason I don't like the pumpkin beer kick is because it comes and goes at the wrong time, as all beer seasons really. But the truth is, I think Pumpkin beers are meant for the more wide spread consumer, over people here on BA. They're a gateway beer in my mind to a brewery, and that is not a bad thing! But they really need to slim down the lineups at beer stores because too much of anything is too much...and because I say so, lol.

Agreed to a point. While I do think pumpkin beers in general can be a little gimmicky for the hardcore beer nerd, I would argue a couple of breweries do them well beyond the level of schlock. For example, Central Waters Headless Heron is an awesome bourbon barrel-aged pumpkin ale that is complex and really nicely rendered. Lakefront's Imperial Pumpkin, which is aged in brandy barrels, is also an excellent pumpkin beer with enough going on to keep you interested - plus, it ages like a fucking champ. Urban Chestnut also makes a pumpkin stout that manages to remain to style in terms of a traditional English stout - about 5.5 percent ABV give or take - with those traditional stout notes while incorporating just enough pumpkin to give the beer that autumn vibe.

I don't doubt that there are some great beers out there, but the beers I usually have available to me are not the greatest of choices. But I am always looking to try new beers, so if I can find those, I will definitely try them!
