As far as IPA goes, I am all about the "pine", but please leave out the "apple."

One of the worst beers I ever had (drank it on a sort-of dare) was this.... Yuck! Still mentally blocking that awful taste from my memory. *chills*

The Ballast Point is hopefully much better, but no pineapple beer for me again. It was ruined for me...

    Love the grapefruit stuff though....

That's the only reason I don't get it. The beer is great but I can get beer thats just as good for $10.

I know what you mean. My fiancée loves the stuff, and I can't bear to look at it.

Don't love the fruit variety IPA's by Ballast Point, however I think this is a good way to sell them in 12 variety pack.

The prices do not reflect the quality of the beer. Of course it's fine quality beer with good ingredients. The high cost comes from the way distribution channels work.

If you like the beer, you've got to suck it up and pay the premium, that's the nature of craft beer. Now if collectively people just let the stuff sit on the shelves, some vendors may ask the distributor for a price break and stop carrying the the product.

Much of the premium of beer these days is markup from dealing with the middleman. Which is why I firmly believe in supporting self distributing brewers.

I think Sculpin is way overrated. The only fruit beer from BP I think I like is the Grapefruit Sculpin, and as far as IPAs go it's still not that great. Pineapple and all the other fruit beers from them I tried taste like candied syrup jolly rancher-esque. At $30 it is laughable imho.

Not too long ago Sculpin could only be found in 22ml bombers. It was also pretty dang hard to find and was worth its weight in gold on the trading market.
Since Constellation they've upped production enormously while relying on the dedicated following and respect its garnered to rationalize the high prices and achieve what is I'm sure an unbelievably good profit margin.

I love me some Ballast Point, but like others have said, the $ is a little steep. I now buy the Sam Adams Grapefruit IPA in place of the Grapefruit Sculpin. Saves me $5.

Agreed. I like the grapefruit better than the pineapple. Pineapple was decent but it was more on the nose than in the mouthfeel. The grapefruit lent itself perfectly I thought to the base Sculpin. I have a single habñero I've yet to try...

Have the original sculpin, Grapefruit and Pineapple varieties in my store at 14.99/6pk. I enjoy the beer quite a bit but it's the cross country distribution that kills us over on the east coast. Although now we're starting to see Ballast in big chain grocery stores here so we're all hoping for a price break.

I hear what you are saying here. I enjoy drinking both of those beers but with Sam Adams being much more reasonably priced it is indeed a 'winner'!

    Cheers!
